Beginning March 2nd, 2020 the Mailing Lists functionality on RootsWeb will be discontinued. Users will no longer be able to send outgoing emails or accept incoming emails. Additionally, administration tools will no longer be available to list administrators and mailing lists will be put into an archival state.
Administrators may save the emails in their list prior to March 2nd. After that, mailing list archives will remain available and searchable on RootsWeb
Ancestry is currently up for sale again. The new owners could spin off rootsweb as a separate company, sell it, slather advertising all over your pages (they already have branded your account - it would be very easy to slip some advertising into that banner.
They do not allow any php, C++ or cgi programming on your site except for very stuff like a counter.
They certainly will not allow anything with a database to be uploaded unless you give them the database (which would then end up in ancestry). I know, because early on I gave them a couple of databases to experiment with as they tried to create a search engine for them.
Nothing is forever - remember geocities? AOL web pages? Compuserve? Yahoo web pages?

If you read their terms of service (TOS) they state that all data on any of
their servers is then their property. I don't know if they have changed
that from 2008 and the big brou-ha-ha but I rather doubt it. There has
been databases that were on Rootsweb and free that have been moved to
Ancestry and the only way to access them is through a subscription now.

I can understand that but I am fairly confident that the sites will
disappear long before you or I succumb. I do like RW as a familiar site
and when my FTP pathway was broken I was able to get in them via their
online editor which still works, even though there is no link ANYWHERE on
RW for it. Bit by bit, it will be dismantled and since we don't pay them,
we have no say-so in what happens.
I am not saying to rush right out and move our county sites but if we
develop projects like the gravestone project, we definitely don't want to
house it on RW. Additionally I don't think it supports php but I could be
wrong.

Stupid phone. ;)
I work at sports venues and have for years. I don't get "paid" at this second job. The money *must* go to a non-profit 501(c)3.
I used to use it for my kids' tuition. But they've all graduated now. So I typically use it for missions, orphanages, and local charities. At this moment I could donate $200 easily. I would just need the non-profit address and receiving account.
I support moving off of rootsweb/ancestry.

Good Evening,
Mike makes valid points.
Here in the CAGenWeb, the SC, ASC's & CC's donate funds to pay server
fees. Usually we get enough to pay for 36 months which, this time,
amounted to almost $400.00. We have been doing this since 2000 when our
founder could no longer afford to pick up the tab.
But, our CC's are aging and funds can be limited when we get to
retirement age. [I am 76 years young].
I have been SC for a long time and also the admin person for Control
Panel functions, etc. I have 3 ASC's who are all tech savvy and can take
over anytime I need them.
We also collect donations to pay for domain fees - last time we renewed
for 5 years.
Unfortunately, we have some CC's who do not contribute which leaves the
rest of us to pick up the slack. Unfair, you betcha, but we cannot force
anyone to 'donate' - it is a goodwill gesture that brings good karma
with it.
Anyone who wishes to move their county to another host is free to do so.
When approached about this, I back up the County and relink the new site
to our TOC.
The CAGenWeb has never been on RootsWeb, and hopefully never will be.
But, that said, it is not easy to ask for money to keep the wolf away
from the door.
Incorporating is a lot of work, but if MN could find a benefactor who
had the where-with-all to set it up, that might be the answer. Fund
raising is not for the faint of heart.
I believe that a lot of USGenWeb States are in a similar situation.
Perhaps setting up some sort of mail list to address global issues might
be a good idea.

The USGenWeb Archives has 3 separate ways to submit your photos:
http://genrecords.orghttp://genrecords.nethttp://poppet.org
All 3 automatically upload the photos and can generate the html code. Here is an example of a cemetery I did:

I believe this is one of the reasons Find A Grave has grown so fast, but I've also found many mistakes on Find A Grave so it's trust but verify.
Why couldn't the Minnesota Project be placed on rootsweb someplace or even a sub-folder to ~mngenweb? Iowa has the Friends of IAGenWeb which funds their servers but setting that up for Minnesota would probably take longer than setting up a gravestone project. Seems like sometime ago there was some discussion about coordinators moving their sites to a private server to get away from rootsweb. In that discussion there were one or two people who volunteered to put the sites on their server but I can't remember who they were, where they were at, etc.
Except for trying to arrange a place to put Minnesota Project I wouldn't mind trying to get it off the ground although I'm not sure what a 'technical person' needs to know and once I do, if I could do that.

The problem with putting the project on RW is that Ancestry owns them as
well. They are moving toward not offering that free service but in the
meantime they periodically harvest the data that us volunteers have worked
so hard to provide our visitors for free. They say they have the right to
do that which led to the exodus of so many counties on RW back when they
bought RW.
Server space is quite economical these days and getting off the ground
would not take too terribly much space. I can talk to Jeff and see what is
involved. As far as technical, I am sure you could handle the stewardship
of the project, Mike and for the real technical aspects, should they come
up, I am sure we could find someone to assist. Maybe talking to Rich Lowe
would be helpful as well, since he is the state coordinator of that project
in Iowa. Mainly we message him to correct cemetery names or putting them
in the correct country after errors. I am also a coordinator in the Ohio
Gravestone Photo project which is a stand alone project and it has been
quite simple over the years to manage.
I would like to see us doing this as a MNGenWeb project because I would
love to submit hundreds of Minnesota photos I have taken. We can also
encourage Find a Grave submitters to submit to the project as well. The
Gravestone Photo Project does not have the personalization that Find A
Grave does so people normally have no problem submitting to both.

Findagrave.com is a great resource for uploading/managing images.
Once a memorial has been created, you can upload images of the monuments
and markers AND photos/images of the subject of the memorial.

A volunteer in my county has just dropped a few hundred headstone images

Thanks Tim. This is a good site and I used it often. I found another site, also from the University of Minnesota collection, that includes the 1916 Plat Maps but also, in some counties, has other years and city plats. It's the John Borchert Map Library and I put a link to it on the Special Project Minnesota Digital Maps Library - http://usgwarchives.net/maps/minnesota/ .
Speaking of the Special Project, I'm always looking for new contributions especially from the counties.

Welcome Wayne!
Each county does have a mailing list. With the advent of social media,
many of the lists have fallen into disuse. I try to announce new items
added to the county site so that list members are aware of new resources
even if they don't regularly visit the web site.
I also encourage them every so often to post what they are seeking so that
perhaps other list members can offer assistance as well.
They are also good for asking for volunteers to assist in transcribing
material for one's web site, asking for donations to the web site. If one
gets good feedback, one is more likely to receive same in kind. After a
while a list can become its own family of common interest, which was the
original intent.

I just discovered MNMARSHA-L, a mailing list for my county hosted by the
RootsWeb listserv, and subscribed to it. Does every county have one of
these? Are they being used for research or for county organizing? This
one seems... extremely under-used.
