Beginning March 2nd, 2020 the Mailing Lists functionality on RootsWeb will be discontinued. Users will no longer be able to send outgoing emails or accept incoming emails. Additionally, administration tools will no longer be available to list administrators and mailing lists will be put into an archival state.
Administrators may save the emails in their list prior to March 2nd. After that, mailing list archives will remain available and searchable on RootsWeb
A long, long time ago, about 50 years. when I was a child, we had a couple
in our town that had a couple of easter egg trees like this - not so fully
loaded but still an impressive show.

I could only find one county with the USGenWeb/Rootsweb banner. It is Pine County. I have never seen this one before. It is part of the Rootsweb plug in code. But they only apply a link to the Rootsweb image and the Ancestry image linking to both. They do not add a link to the USGenWeb image.

Here is the letter that explains how to change the banner. Maybe it will
work...
Dear USGenWeb coordinators,
For those of you with pages hosted on RootsWeb.com we wanted to give you an
update on our plan for including a small masthead at the top of hosted
pages on RootsWeb. We love being able to host your page and other pages
that help the family history community so much, and adding this small
masthead to acknowledge our hosting service allows us to continue to be
able to offer this free hosting service as well as other services.
The mastheads will be included on pages as early as May 21st. The standard
masthead can be viewed here:
http://www.rootsweb.ancestry.com/rootsweb/samples_mastheads/masthead_Gene...
As a USGenWeb coordinator you will also have the option to use a USGenWeb
specific masthead. It can be viewed here:
http://www.rootsweb.ancestry.com/rootsweb/samples_mastheads/masthead_USGe...
To get the USGenWeb masthead on your page instead of the standard one all
you need to do is place a file named 'banner_select' in your public_html
directory. It should contain the text 'USGENWEB' (all caps and without the
quotation marks) and nothing else.

There we go !!! I went into my two ND counties and sure enough I have the banner_select file so I put one in Clay County and I’m back to the banner without the search box. Wow, that was seven years ago. Completely forgot it. Time goes fast (unless it’s my age).

I would be very interested in this. By us placing code into the html it would lead one to expect that it is optional for us. It isn’t. After seeing Joy’s note on bad html, I played around with both the code they use for the two different banners. It ‘appears’ they look for </head> and insert code before it, or <Body> and insert code before it, and failing those two, </html> or </body> but I quit after awhile as I thought it was a waste of time and I have lots of other stuff I could be doing. It would surprise me if there is code that we insert not them.

Bryant,
yes, that’s what I found as far as linking. So far all they are doing is inserting the banner with their links and they aren’t touching any of our code. On my two North Dakota counties, the USGenWeb/Rootsweb Banner has been on them since they started this a few years ago. As far as I know, the banner with their search box is fairly recent. Incidently, their search box is messed up. When you enter a first name the results say last name and vice versa.
I’m going to experiment with Laverne’s idea of getting it on the bottom. That way it will be very close to my external links blurb. Putting the links blurb on top is something I’m not in favor of.

OK thank you. Now I understand. The USGenWeb Banner is still on my North Dakota counties without the search box. I don’t have any special code that I put in. It’s all placed in there by the rootsweb people just like the current banner for Minnesota with the search box.

Mike, back in 2008 I think it was, when RW first instituted the Banners, the NC negotiated for a USGW banner. Their is a special tag you have to put on your page for the USGW Banner to appear, unfortunately I do not know what that code is, as at the time it was done, I had no sites on RW.
If anyone knows what that tag is, will you please send it to the list?

I have been working with UTGenWeb. The SC resigned a few months ago, and
the ASC has recently resigned.
We have a new redesigned state page and have numerous counties available
for adoption. I would love to have new CCs adopt our counties there. If
you are willing to make a commitment to one of these counties, it would
make a huge difference to the state. Presently the following are available
for adoption:
Box Elder - totally off line for quite some time
Daggett
Davis
Grand
Iron
Juab
Kane
Millard
Piute
Tooele
There may be another one or two but not fully decided yet. I have learned
that numerous of the prior CCs resigned some time ago; however, the
counties were not marked adoptable.
If you are interested in one of these counties, please contact me and place
the county name in the subject line. Send your email to me at:
ncusgenweb(a)gmail.com
My request is that if you adopt a county, please do not turn it into a blog
or a word press site.
Thanks for your consideration.

Hi Joy,
Once I get my system back up, I will be asking for space for three MN
Counties and one for MO.
I lost my Win 8.1 O/S yesterday and have been in serious pursuit of a way
not to go crazy.
I like your idea of a crystal ball. Maybe we can invent a virtual one that

I can provide web space for any county that wants it - free, no ads
Your URL would be like
http://theusgenweb.org/mn/(your county name here)
For example, my Los Angeles County web site is here:
http://theusgenweb.org/ca/losangeles/

If you select a new hosting place in the next couple of days, please let me know which one you picked and why. I will probably follow in short order. One of the things I enjoyed about rootsweb for so long was that it was an “ad free” zone. I’m going to “vote with my feet."
Thanks,
Kathy

It is the same nickel and dime effort to generate more revenue that they used when ancestry took over Rootsweb the first time. Rootsweb is a good organization, but they do belong to ancestry and will do what they are told to do.

Personally I think this will hurt as there are many people who don’t like ancestry.com, they charge too much, etc. It was one thing we acknowledge they give us free hosting, it’s another where we now are a portal for their site. This search box heading is not on my other rootsweb sites (yet), just Minnesota. At this time a disclaimer on outside links on our websites is a recommendation, maybe with this blatant search box that should change.

Tim - run a tracert to see if there is a break between you and rootsweb if others are not having a problem

Thanks Martha but I did all that earlier in both of my browsers. Makes no difference. I started to look at the source code they use to install the banner and compare what sites have the search box and what don’t. After several minutes I said the heck with it. Why spend my time on something like this when I have so much other stuff that’s productive and also in the middle of it I was very seriously thinking about changing servers. That’s not the most fun but in long run it would be better. Heard back from Joy and Bryant’s note has convinced me to go with theusgenweb.org server.
Some time ago, somebody told me that rootsweb uses more than one server and that not all counties are on the same one, so maybe that’s why. Puzzling.
When I first started the Minnesota county, there was no banner as I recall. I even went into wayback to check and sure enough it wasn’t there so I guess this is all recent for Minnesota sites.

Good Afternoon Mike,
Maybe if you clean the cache the search box will show up.
I am disturbed about this. I am not a fan of Ancestry and will be moving
my Counties as soon as I get my PC back up and running. It took a dump
this afternoon. Lost my O/S
