Jeannie -
My grandmother died before I was born but on her death certificate it listed
the number of years in this country but I don't think it mentioned her
citizenship at the time of her death, just that she was born in Canada.

Hi Grace
My Mother-in-law was born in Canada and married a US citizen. She died
many
years later believing she was still a Canadian.

don't know about Italy but a friend's husband was born in Canada and
their
kids had dual citizenship. I've wondered about that as well because my
grandmother was born in Canada but I've heard that marriage automatically
made her a U.S. citizen.
