Hi there~
Well that is hard to say...what it means in most parts when they were in say
NY when they bought property in Livingston County is that they lived there.
Now the question is, had they lived in say CT before they moved to NY? Land
records are only documents that you can take a clue like o.k I see that they
were living in Orange County NY when they bought this piece of property,
hmmmm maybe I should go & check around in data for Orange county to see if
at the time record of this purchase was he or she active in their community
there? Look in old county histories, newspapers, census etc. to establish
that answer. The land records are great because so many did not know where
there people in Livingston came from so these records are great pieces of
the puzzle. Some people have told me over the years that they knew their
family was in Iosco Twp of Livingston County MI. When they read the land
record they realized that before they moved their family there, they
actually had started out in Green Oak Twp. in Livingston County MI. Then
following the trail they read the land record of the purchase for Green Oak
they then found that they were from another state.
Sometimes you will even find that a person was actually living west of a
piece of property in say Nebraska....many times that was either land
speculating or they had bought it for a younger brother or something so they
could get established and who knows eventually move to NE with the older
brother.
I have seen by following land records that often early in this country young
men would leave their family home in say eastern NY and walk across the
state and contract with a person to clear their land for what today seems
like a minuscule amount of money $10 for 100 acres. Then they will walk
another several hundred miles buy 100 acres for that $10 and they will clear
it and then they will sell it for $300 or whatever the going price was and
then continue that pattern until they got where they felt they could buy a
good 600-1000 acres start a homestead, find a spouse and settle down. Often
we would realize that this was one of the reasons the men were so much older
than the wives they took when they were finally able to settle down. There
are so many interesting stories to be found in digging for roots some which
totally astounded me and others that just made me laugh till I was silly.

I hope this answers your question, if not please ask some more and I will
try to answer it.

I noticed, when I was looking up the various names in our families, that
under the cities are many different state names. Are these states the
original places that these people relocated from? Thank you, Lynn Searles
