Good Day All;
Your date for the Central School Fire are wrong. I have included a small
piece from Owosso history. I am a cousin of James Frederick (Fred) Ross who
was filled that day and his brother William (Will) who was injured. Their
other brother Zenas Herbert Ross was the Fire Chief and town Marshall at the
time. I attended Owosso in 2002 and had my picture taken along side of
Fred's picture. The Firemen at the station gave me a reprint of the front
page of the April 1, 1900 newspaper which appeared on the front page of the
April 1, 2000 Owosso newspaper. I also found Fred's grave along with his
parents and 35 other Ross relatives on Oak Hill Cemetery. This was all added
to my genealogy quest. Just a short note, all of the Ross' were descendents
of Zenas Ross of Rutland Vermont.
Charles (Chuck) Ross, Peterborough, ON.
"On April Fool's Day, 1900, tragedy struck. A fire broke out at Owosso Union
School shortly after 7:00 on Sunday morning. Charles Rubleman spotted the
fire and pulled a nearby alarm box. At the firehall, the firemen sprung the
horse stalls open. A team of horses, Old Jake and Doc, pulled the pump wagon
to the fire. Not only firemen but local volunteers responded quickly. The
fire had two casualties. Fireman Frederick Ross and a schoolboy, Frank
Tucker, perished in the fire. School was not in session, but Frank Tucker
repeatedly ran into the burning building. A fire-weakened wall fell on Ross
and Tucker".
