Mark: I would be very interested in knowing a bit more about your COLE
family member (who may have a Canfield in her background). What I am
reading is that you don't know yet what Canfields she had as family and in
what time period. Am I right? At this juncture I would be looking at her
for time period and family location to see if it matches with any new
information I might gather. If you would be so kind to forward that
particular piece of information, I wold be appreciative.
I am also hoping to contact the Three Rivers Genealogical Society in case
they have any pertinant information. May I ask, is the Michigan Land
records located at the County Level, or at the State? Thanks! Sandy Childs

Subject: [MIGEN-L] Canfields & Cole in St. Joseph Co.
Hello fellow Michigan List members. I am new to the list and looking
forward to my research in Michigan. CANFIELD family maried into COLE,
COLLINS, CUTLER & KNAPP families (see below) circa 1839-1860.
I am looking for CANFIELD and COLE family members in the Three Rivers,
Centerville
and Mishawauka, St Joseph Co., area in the early to mid-1800's
time period.
My great-grandfather, ORSEMUS CANFIELD, b: 1814 Millport, Chemung Co., NY.
He was a
cooper.
married: EMILY COLE, (b. 12 Apr. 1825, dau. of Methodist Episcopal
Minister) in 1841 at Three Rivers. d, Aug. 1851
4 Children: (daughters)
SABRA CECILIA CANFIELD, b. 1842, d June 1851
ANN MARIE, b. 1846, d. July 1851
EMILY MADORA , b. 1848, d. Dec. 29, 1851
FRANCES PORTER, b. 1850, d. unknown
EMILY (COLE) CANFIELD, and all the children died in about a 6 month
period in
1851 which leads me to believe it was either because of a disease
or a disaster of some kind. Can anyone tell me what was going on in this
year? Was there a disease? Natural Disaster? Indians? or?
ORSEMUS CANFIELD married a second time in CENTERVILLE, to HANNAH
DUNKIN/DUNCAN in
1852. Hannah was born in Schykill Co., PN. They had 8
children - The eldest (HENRY, EZRA CHARLES, CHARLES HIRAM, ALICE) were
probably born in Michigan. They all moved on to Lucas Co., IOWA in 1862
where they were among the earliest settlers.
.
IRA & MELISSIE CANFIELD were Orseumus' parents. IRA was last reported to
be in MISHAWAUKA, ST. JOSEPH CO. in 1845. Nothing else is known about him.
Other adult children of IRA & MELISSIE were:
EZEKIAL
ELISHA C. m. Emma Frazier
AMOS B.
RACHEL, m. Cutler
ABRAM
PHEOBE S., m. Isaack Knapp
IRA'S brothers were:
HIRAM ELISHA (aka ELISHA) m. Rhoda Olds(Oles)
ZENUS
SILAS, m. Susannah Michaels
GRAHAM (May be Ezekial Graham)
ORSEMUS (m1. Mary Kent, m2. Caroline Barker)
THADEOUS
PHILANDER
Hope someone can help me know where to go on this. Any assistance would
be
appreciated!
