Aha. That's exactly what Noble Brackinreed did also. He filed for benefits, and I
have the paper that identifies that. And they both happened at the same time, so
you're probably right on the mark there. I had never bothered to bring that up, and
I'm betting it's the reason he DID get Naturalized.

I have an ancestor who waited years to file papers, but then when he wanted
the veterans benefits when he was older, he was required to. So there is a
possible reason people do so 30-40 years later.

Borders must have been pretty invisible then. I wrote a story about
a
gentleman from Ontario, who wandered over and was looking for work and
ended up enlisting with the Union army in Ohio. He served his time, the
war ended, and he was naturalized in 1900. So, they were fighting as
Canadians, but not identified as such. I'd be willing to bet that if your
ancestor came over, fought, and then stayed, he may well have not gotten
his citizenship at all, or may have gotten it much later. I know of some
folks that didn't bother to get that until 30-40 years after they came
here. You wonder why they bothered at all, but it may have had to do with
some new US laws that had been passed.

Although I don't know the circumstances, my great-uncle born in Ontario,
fought in the Civil War here. I am unclear whether he became a U.S.
citizen
or not prior to that or was he fighting as a Canadian?
