Hi,
I was wondering if anyone had any experience getting naturalization
documents from Detroit. I have some family members that I would like to
get at least the Declaration of Intent for. Any suggestions are welcome.
I should mention that I contacted the Michigan archives regarding my
great-grandmother and they told me that I should contact the U.S.
District Court in Detroit (and gave me an address) first to get a
citation then contact the National Archives Regional Branch in Chicago.
I guess what I am wondering is how should I form a letter to the District
Court and has anyone had any experiences with them so I have an idea of
what to expect (or not expect).
Thanks,
Elise in WA
Hello everyone,
The US District Court naturalization card index has been filmed by LDS
and available via Family History Centers.
Use the FHL card catalog at
familysearch.org and enter Wayne and
Michigan for place, choose Michigan, Wayne, choose naturalization and
citizenship indexes.
The names are by soundex code to allow for some variations in spelling.
You need the petition number from the index card as that is how they are
filed in NARA Great Lakes in Chicago.
If you write to the court, they will charge you at least $15. That was
the fee in 2001 and I haven't been there since then.
