I have found that, no matter what a place was called in what year, our ancestors called it
what they knew it by. So, many times, in their mouths (and on censuses or in letters),
they referred to it by that name. They could have cared less about official titles or
names. I know that my ancestor, who said he was born in York state, was born in New York,
we believe. Finding him has been a real challenge, since he was vague about his
childhood, and also ran away to Canada to escape an unpleasant apprenticeship. No matter
where he was, according to him, he was illegal. Illegal in the state due to his running
away, and illegal in Canada, due to his not being born there or having family there (as
far as we know).
It's challenging just to figure out what our people meant at times, when they said
things or wrote things. I have a grandmother (!) who actually did not know that she was
born in Wisconsin, rather than the Massachusetts that she gave all her life as her birth
state! That one was rather easier to figure out, since I found her father and mother
married in WI. I have never found any birth information yet, but the day may come... IF
they reported it.
I believe 1665 is the correct information. The site I found had the typo in it, which is
understandable. But other sites had similar information. So, I'm guessing it was a
good year. I'd certainly google other sites for that, however, to see if you can come
up with a New York data site that has the same dates.

Myra,
I have relatives who moved from Pennsylvania to "New Amsterdam" in the
1700's. They were not in America in the 1600's and if it was already NY,
they would not have called it by the common name "New Amsterdam". Is 1665
correct??

According to Wiki Answers:
http://wiki.answers.com/Q/When_did_New_Amsterdam_become_New_York
New Amsterdam became known as New York on June 1965.
Other information:
New Amsterdam was the largest Dutch colonial settlement in North America.
During the second Anglo-Dutch War between England and the United
Netherlands, the colony was surrendered to the English on 24 September
1664, and renamed New York. When the Dutch retook control briefly in 1673,
they renamed it "New Orange", but ceded it permanently to England after
the signing of the Treaty of Westminster in 1674.

Jan -
A few weeks ago on a rerun of "Are You Smarter Than a 5th Grader", the
question the celebrity was asked was "What is the Dutch settlement
initially
called New Amsterdam called today"? And she had to 'drop out'. Guess I
thought everyone knew that but then I remember my dad saying our ancestors
lived in NY when it was still called New Amsterdam. Do you happen to know
when the name change took place?
