I am new to this list and I am hoping that this name might be familiar
to other listers.
I am looking for information on a CHARLES ELSWORTH CRUMMEL. Charles was
b 10 April 1888 and I have conflicting information. I have the birth as
being in NY but on another record it states he was b in BRYAN, OHIO. His
parents were LUCINDA JACOBSIN and CHRISTOPHER CRUMMEL. He married a MAY
PETERSON (aka JONES) on 3 April 1916 in Toronto, Canada.
I have little information on him prior to his entering Canada, abt 1915
perhaps, except for the fact that he spent four years in the Tennessee
National Guard. He enlisted Jan 1, 1916 at Windsor in the Canadian
Expeditionary Force and was assigned to the 97th Overseas Battalion. At
the time of his discharge 12 July 1819 in Toronto his occupation was
said to be Commercial Traveller although in the enlistment papers his
occ. was machinist..
In his papers for the Expeditionary Force, the name of next of kin was
WILL CRUMMEL, a cousin , 515 Carrel St, Saganaw, Michigan. Also his
papers state he was a Methodist.
Again his papers indicate that at the time of his service, his father
was deceased. His mother Mrs Lucinda Crummel lived in Mt Pleasant,
Michigan. Charles was not the sole support of his mother.
At the time of discharge, Charles had medical problems effecting his
eyes and his legs. The last known address in 1919 was 248 Vaughan Rd in
Toronto. However within days of discharge, they moved and the Separation
allowance was sent to c/o 250 Vaughan Rd, suggesting they left the city
but where did they go!!
His wife remarried in England in 1935.
The family do not know whether Charles died or whether the couple
divorced or separated. Attempts to trace Charles in Canada have failed
and given the fact that his relatives lived in Michigan, I feel it is
possible that the family moved to Michigan and he possibly died there.
It is also possible that Charles moved on his own and the family
returned to England.
I would appreciate hearing from anyone who may recognise the name or
have any leads on Charles. I will acknowledge and respond quickly to any
replies. I apologise for the lengthy query. Hopefully it is not too
confusing!
