Context Impacts Our Family Tree
One of the things that we sometimes over look in doing our research is Context.
Context impacts our Family Tree in many ways and sometimes provides the "Why" to
what is happening at that time in the world and in the neighborhoods that we are
researching in. "Why" did Great-Great-Grandma marry Great-Great-Grandpa? What
possessed our ancestors to go to the frontier? What was the West at the time you're
researching? Sometimes this is overlooked or not even considered as we do our research. We
may be looking at the world of our ancestors through "today's eyes" and this
may help you in looking for clues in places that you haven't looked before.
We will be packing a covered wagon to head west, so be ready to travel.
The Internet
"If it's on the Internet it MUST be right!".This workshop is to help you in
evaluating what is on the Internet and what to look for in the information you find. Not
all websites are helpful and sometimes what we find is incorrect and will lead us down the
wrong research path. The Internet is a fantastic research tool and should not be
overlooked, but there are things to be considered about the information we find.
Note: If you have anything that you think might be helpful in the discussion of either of
these subjects, please bring it with you and as time permits we can discuss it. Please
make sure that all materials you bring have your name, address & current phone number
in case you misplace it.
LUNCH - The Pre-paid lunches will be available at the Sunfield Community. Lunch is being
catered by Swede's Restaurant in Mulliken. Room or if you prefer, bring a sack lunch.
Pere Marquette Railroad
The Muskegon Railroad Historical Society
Kent McFaden, Photographer and Historian for The Muskegon Railroad Historical Society will
be presenting an informative slide show on the history of the Pere Marquette Railroad,
which traveled from Grand Ledge to Grand Rapids. One of their primary functions is to
educate the public about the rich and colorful railroad history of the west Michigan area.
Located in the historic district of Muskegon, Michigan, the Muskegon Railroad Historical
Society (MRHS) preserves and encourages the history of railroading through the development
and maintenance of a railroad library and video collection, model railroad layouts in
three scales, and continual educational seminars and meetings revolving around all aspects
of railroading. So come and climb aboard, learn the history of the railroad and the small
towns between Grand Ledge and Grand Rapids.
Sunfield is located in the northwest corner of Eaton County. If you are interested in
