Mr. Caldwell,
I believe that you know that there is a Genealogical Society in Mecosta
County. You have written several letters there, to Mecosta County, to this
list, the Mecosta County list and to me.
I have answered every question that I could for you via the email that I
sent you back.
The only other thing that could be done is for someone to go to the library,
since Mecosta Co does not have record of the death, spend a few hours and
research for you thru newspaper microfilm. This is something that is going
to be discussed at tonights meeting. We meet every two months. I will get
back with you on the costs for doing that research.
I hope this answers your questions.

This question has to do with Mecosta County genealogy
and a possible newspaper article after 12/24/1872 death.
Is there a Genealogical Society there that covers Mecosta?
My great great grandfather John Caldwell from
Ireland died in Big Rapids on 24 December 1872.
At the time he lived in Litchfield, Hillsdale County.
His 2 eldest sons (Thomas & John Jr) had homesteads
in Missaukee County near Lake City. Otherwise there is
no connection of my Caldwell family to Big Rapids or
the Mecosta County area. I am trying to figure why
my great great grandfather was in Big Rapids at the time;
other than perhaps going back to Hillsdale County after
visiting his sons in the Lake City area of Missaukee County.
Would it have had better medical facilities (e.g. a hospital)?
Can NOT find where John Caldwell is buried. Apparently he is
buried in Big Rapids someplace; that I have not been able to
find so far...
The Michigan death index GENDIS does shows his death record.
What cemetery would be a logical choice? Is it on-line?
Would someone be able to look up in the logical cemetery
to find John Caldwell if he is in fact buried in Big Rapids?
Would there be an obituary on John Caldwell in the Big Rapids
local newspaper of the time of 1872? Would there be an article
in the local newspaper shortly after December 24th 1872 about
"a stranger that died in Big Rapids" or perhaps about a
strange that died while arriving on the train from Lake City.
The son that would probably be with John would be Thomas.
What hospital was going at this time? Would there be
archived doctor's records?
All my other Caldwell relatives are buried in the
Caldwell cemetery in Missaukee County (Arlene);
EXCEPT for my great great grandfather John Caldwell (Sr).
Need help in finding where he is buried (Michigan
someplace unknown; maybe in Big Rapids; maybe near here).
He lived in Jonesville/Litchfield in Hillsdale County at the time,
however he is NOT buried anywhere in the Hillsdale County.
His wife Jane (Thompson) Caldwell however is in the
Sand Creek cemetery in Hillsdale County. The family lived in the
Jonesville / Litchfield area; Hillsdale County, Michigan.
Thanks for any help or ideas....
Doug Caldwell
