Re: Looking for female ancestors of that era in Iowa: I had great, great
success finding them via their local newspaper. Iowa (or other small town
type states) have a great newsy section in the area newspapers. I found all
kinds of details about the lives of my women ancestors looking through the
old time newspapers. Such as their sisters' or brothers' names and their
families; and events that they attended, vacations away from home, military
service (with handsome guy photo) and so on. This first came to my
attention via the Lucas County Gen. Society who went through all the old
newspapers and cut out, pasted to a card and cross referenced all names
filed them alphabetically. All I had to do was go to their card section,
look alphabetically for the family names I was interested in, pull it and go
to all the other binders, or files, they had associated with this name (i.e.
cemetaries, military, and so on). This amount of retention of newspaper
articles by Genealogical Societies is, I believe, very rare but it sure
brought to my attention all the information that is available via the
newspapers -- especially for the women's activities.
I'm now associated with the library in my town and know that if that
newspaper is on film either at the local library or at the local newspaper's
library, then it can often be obtained by inter-library loan. Same goes
with specific newspaper articles of a certain date. They too can be
obtained either by writing directly to the newspaper's own library or via
the town library. Great resource! Just ask your library how it works. (By
the way, in my case I first checked with the Chamber of Commerce of my
ancestor's town to (1) make sure they had a library and to get their number,
and (2) See if there was a newspaper for their area and what was the number.
I then called the newspaper to see if they printed and kept copies for that
particular time period - or would they know where I could get this
information. Cost me probably a dollar total to find this info, but well
worth it. (By the way, most libraries/newspapers have websites now with
contact names.)
Lastly, I heard that Iowa has put most of its old newspapers on film and
has them somehow available via Website. I don't know how it all works - but
I have seen it discussed here on this list. Hey List! Help out here,
please.
Hope this works for you. Take care. Sandy Childs

looking for anyone researching these last names. My GGGreat Aunts
(twins)Gross married brothers with the surname Popp. They each had girls
(and maybe more) One married into the Peaphon family and one married into
the Scherping family.(I have the SSDI for both girls-that's it) It is so
hard to find the female side! If anyone can help please contact me.
