Back at the end of October, Lorie was asking about Chief Pontiac.
My "Michigan History" magazine arrived today. It is a special issue called
"Detroit at 300". Page 9 shows a picture of Chief Pontiac's tomahawk and
states that it is on display at the Detroit Historical Museum (5401 Woodward Avenue
Detroit, MI 48202 313-833-1805). For your information.
I hope it is ok to quote from this magazine: "Pontiac's communiqué to British
commandant Major Henry Gladwin brought to an end a massive Indian effort to capture Fort
Detroit. The attack had begun in May - a result of Native American outrage at British
policies that threatened their way of life. The British garrison endured a long summer,
but Pontiac's failure to cut Gladwin's life line with the east kept him from ever
seriously threatening Fort Detroit. As cold weather neared, many Indians returned to
their families to prepare for winter, bringing to an end one of the longest Indian sieges
in American history."
