Hi All,
Wayne's Library is in the same area as the main branch of the Detroit Public
Library that houses the Burton Collection. You shouldn't be afraid about
going down there - especially during the day. The main branch of the public
library is right across the street (Woodward) from Wayne's campus. There is a
huge police presence - mostly of Wayne State's police- which are bonafide police
(not just security guards) - Students of all cultures attend Wayne. There is
good parking - some metered, some in lots, and there is also an underground
parking structure.
I have not been to the Burton Collection in years so cannot comment as to
the quality of it anymore - but I can say that a trip to the Detroit Public
Library is not an unsafe experience. AS in any big city, you take precautions.
My son started as a freshman at Wayne State this year and is living in a
dorm on campus. Yes - I admit to telling him to be careful - and I admit to
worrying about him (and calling him more than the average mom would) - but the
more I walk around campus with him and look at the wonderful cultural resources
available within Wayne's campus and just on the fringe - I know that staying
away because you fear for your safety is just not founded.
If you summon the courage to visit the Det. Public Library allow for an
hour or so to visit the Art Institute nearby and the Historical Museum, too.
Detroit also has a great Science Center (very secured parking lot - no fear!)
with a domed theater for those great IMax films.
I don't mean to sound like a cheer leader for Detroit - heaven knows it has
a reputation - and probably well deserved - however, the area that encompasses
Wayne's campus is culturally rich and a shame to miss - and if you want to
search the Burton Collection, plan a trip during the day and you will be fine.
The even have free parking on Saturday in their own lot on Putname between
Cass and Woodward.
you can contact the Wayne State police department at 313-577-2224 and ask
where they recommend you park - or call the library at (313) 833-1000
Again, my recent reconnect with Wayne State and our Cultural Center has been
eye-opening. My husband graduated from Wayne in 1975 and we've lived in the
northern suburbs ever since - we don't often go into Detroit. But now with my
son attending the university, we've had the chance to see it intimately. As a
mother, I am always overprotective - but I do feel the area benefits well
outweigh the dangers - if the Burton Collection might hold something for you,
don't be put off because it's in Detroit.
I hope this helps allay some fears!
Sincerely,
Margaret Fallone
I have never had any trouble in the Detroit Library area and I usually
travel alone. I don't like to
park in the underground parking but it isn't because it is in downtown
Detroit, I just
don't like underground parking anywhere, but I grit my teeth and down the
entrance I go.
Someone else told me how unsafe it was to go to the Detroit Lib. - bad
neighborhood - I wouldn't ask anyone to go to that place for any reason.
Best wishes.
