Hi Grace,
Very interesting reply to my question about the safety of the streets around
the library. Actually, I'm from the Syracuse, NY area, so safe or not, I'm
not likely to encounter any problems regarding the library. I would be glad
to take up your offer of a look-up - Directories especially - for the years
1935 thru 1941 - because of WWII - were there any directory updates done -
big question??

having another pair of eyes checking out this info might be of some help to
me. Many thanks. Joan in NYS

Hi Pam & Joan -
Guess I'm one of those braver souls who goes there on a somewhat regular
basis. I grew up in a much safer Detroit but now when I go, I am totally
aware of my surroundings at all times. Sure I've seen some scarry people,
even been approached and asked for "spare change". I have parked across the
street in the underground lot for the DIA(Detroit Institute of Arts), which
is a tad spooky because you have to either park near the elevator (which I
choose not to do) - I park near the Woodward exit, walk up 2 flights of
stairs and I've never had a problem.
Also someone mentioned being handicapped and on Cass Ave., at the back of
the library, there's a circular drive right up to the door that is 100%
handicapped parking. For me Saturdays are best because if you don't choose
to park underground, there is parking on the street around the library but
you don't want to park there during the week because there's a 2 hour limit
at the meters and the meter maids hide in trees and wait for the meter to
expire then pounce to give you a $20 ticket. Those meters aren't in use on
Saturdays. With the DIA across the street and Wayne State U on the other
side of the library, it's a busy area at all times but I have never felt
threatened or in danger. Also, I leave my real purse in the trunk (It put
it there before I leave home) and have a small crissy-crossy purse to hold
some change for the copier, my driver's license, inhaler and kleenex so my
arms aren't encumbered while hauling city directories from the shelf to the
table.
The staff is very helpful as well. Also, there has been a fee incurred if
you need the help of a librarian and are not a resident of the city but I
know my way around well enough that I don't have to ask for their help. I
paid $10 once which was good for the day but won't do that again. The other
users of the Burton collection are also usually very helpful and I don't
hesitate to ask one of them.
I've also recently attended a Tigers game and again, never felt threatened.
That is only a mile or so away from the library. Sooo if anyone wants a
look up, I will offer my services after this coming weekend. I love the
city directories and have pieced my family history together there with their
help.
Grace

Hi Pam,
Someone else told me how unsafe it was to go to the Detroit Lib. - bad
neighborhood - I wouldn't ask anyone to go to that place for any reason.
Best wishes. Joan

Hi Joan,
Boy I wish I still went down there, I would look for you, but sadly I do
not
find it safe any longer and being handicapped it is very difficult for me
to
go that far. The City of Detroit has totally hacked the funds for the
library to use for other purposes that I am not sure are equal to the
benefits that the library can bring to the citizens of the city.
Wish I knew where to go from here but I just am not sure. How about Wayne
State's Library? I helped one researcher and they said they got help from
them.
Pam

Pam,
Checking back on my research records I had already contacted the Detroit
Lib
.- Burton Collection and they stated they could find no information on my
David Wilbur Corbin after 1930. I just don't know where to go from that
point - impenetrable brick-wall -- Thanks - Joan

Joan, I must have missed your first post...I would contact the Detroit
Public Library and the Burton Collection. Those people have more data at
their fingertips that anyone can imagine!!! I have spent days there!!!
