One place I found loads of information at one shot was when I was a paid
member of
Ancestry.com. They have a free trial period of 14 days, but I
heard it was limited. I signed up for three months and then worked like
crazy to get all the info on every possible relative I know. I enjoyed it
immensely when I had it, but couldn't justify membership for a whole year
for me. But if you can join this, it will be of great help - along with
other free sites.
One of the sections there deals with something I believe called Genealogy
lines (? memory going, going, gone)but when you typed in your ancestors
name, it came up with his/her name and their parents, spouses, date of birth
and place, and date of death and place. I learned alot from this section
alone. Might we worth the investment.
Other than that, I think that the County (of your ancestor) Genealogical
Society would be the best bet for loads of information on "their" boys.
Often time they and the newspaper clippings for that time period will give
you good insights. Both of these can be accessed via the internet - via
your search engines.
Good hunting. Sandy Childs in Calif.

Subject: [MIGEN-L] Peter LaPier
I have found a Peter LaPier listed as being in the Civil War. He
enlisted into the B Co., 24th Inf. Reg. 3-21-1865 in Detroit MI. He
mustered out in Detroit on 6-30-1865. The source of this info is:
Record of Service of Michigan Volunteers 1861-65.
Peter may be my ggrandfather. The age would be about right. Does
anyone know how I might find more information regarding this gentleman?
I'm looking for place of birth, wife's name, parent's names etc.
I live in MN, so researching in person would be out of the question.
Any suggestions for on line research would be appreciated. Maybe there
is someone who would volunteer some searching.
Thanks in advance.
Karen
