I second what ElaineO says. Just be hyper vigilant!

As one who was born and raised in Detroit and lived there for the
first 54
years of my life before moving to Missouri 10 years ago, I just have to say
that what you see when you go downtown for Wings games is no way
representative of the city as a whole. The powers that be have concentrated
on the downtown area at the expense of the rest of the city, and not even
all of downtown has been properly maintained or is even safe if you're on
foot. If you go to the Main Library to research in the Burton Collection,
be very aware of your surroundings. I'd also suggest not openly carrying a
purse. Parking there can be an issue, so be prepared to walk a bit from the
closest parking lots.
BTW, my grandparents are also buried at Woodmere and Holy Cross. My father
is buried at Holy Cross, too. Haven't been there in many years.
I'm not trying to be unduly negative, just realistic, and hopefully
helpful.
