As one who was born and raised in Detroit and lived there for the first 54
years of my life before moving to Missouri 10 years ago, I just have to say
that what you see when you go downtown for Wings games is no way
representative of the city as a whole. The powers that be have concentrated
on the downtown area at the expense of the rest of the city, and not even
all of downtown has been properly maintained or is even safe if you're on
foot. If you go to the Main Library to research in the Burton Collection,
be very aware of your surroundings. I'd also suggest not openly carrying a
purse. Parking there can be an issue, so be prepared to walk a bit from the
closest parking lots.
BTW, my grandparents are also buried at Woodmere and Holy Cross. My father
is buried at Holy Cross, too. Haven't been there in many years.
I'm not trying to be unduly negative, just realistic, and hopefully helpful.

Wow! I'm surprised at all the negative comments, too. I would
love to
live there, but I admit I would live in Dearborn. Anyway.....downtown
Detroit is very clean and nice. It depends on what you're going there for,
I think. We are big Red Wings fans and have been there a number of times
for games. We have stayed at the Ren Cen right downtown and the Greektown
Hotel a number of times and have encountered no problems. We walked all
around downtown day and night and have taken the people mover numerous
times. I think Detroit is like any other city ----- you just have to watch
out for yourself and be aware of your surroundings. My grandparents are
buried at Holy Cross and Woodmere cemeteries and we have been there a
number of times, too.
I love Detroit! For the gal who is actually planning a trip ..... I say
go and have a good time.
