William Brookins, Dowagiac's oldest soldier, who disappeared from his home in
that city several weeks ago died Friday morning in the Homeopathic hospital at
Rochester, N.Y. where he has been confined with pneumonia for at least six
weeks, he having wandered to that city in a delerium. He was 85 years old and
had served in the Mexican war and war of the rebellion doing meritorius
service in both. He had been granted $30 a month pension, through the efforts
of Congressman Hamilton.
Additional Comments:
William's birthdate was probably between 1824 and 1826. Death certificate
showed him as 76 years old, tombstone shows birth in 1825; military pension
file has several ages shown.
William is buried in Riverside Cemetery (Dowagiac, Cass, Michigan) beside his
second wife Mary Ann Rasco Brookins and her parents S.S. & W.J. Rasco.
