Death of Mrs. Snyder
Eliza Armstrong, wife of Peter Snyder, died at the home of the family up in the
bend of the river last Sunday evening after an illness of about ten minutes.
She had what physicians call a spasm of the glottis and simply was suffocated.
She was buried from her late home, Wednesday, Jan 14, Rev. H.L. Potter
conducting the service.
Mrs. Snyder was born in this village more han 57 years ago and her life has
been passed in this vicinity. She was married in December, 1862, and five
children have been born to the union. The daughter died in infancy, and one
son John, about thirteen years ago when near manhood.
Three sons survive to mourn withtheir father, the loss of an excellent wife and
mother. The sons are all well known to our people as Harry, the eldest, and
George, the youngest have always lived here or near this place. Frank C., the
second son has worked his way to a distinguished position amoung civil engineers
and occupies a responsible place in the track elevation in Chicago. Two of Mrs.
Snyder's sisters have preceded her to the grave. They were Mrs. Lucretia
Batrholomew and Mrs. Mary Fisher. Mrs. A.B. Ayers, Mrs. Wm. D. Sparks and Geo.
Armstrong, sisters and brother, survive. So many of her near relatives as are
living were present and saw her laid in Rose hill cemetery near the grave of her
mother whose birthday was the day of the daughter's burial.
We are apt to speak well of the dead where nothing serious is recorded against
the deceased, but subject of this sketch was known to all old and most of the
younger residents of this vicinity, and all spoke well of her during her whole
life. She was a loyal faithful wife, a tender mother, a kind and helpful
neighbor and one who possessed good judgement in management of household affairs
and in intercourse with those around her. She was regarded as a woman of rather
unusual health and strength and her sudden, alost tragic, death was a shock to
all who knew her.
Additional Comments:
daughter of John and Lydia Ann Armstrong, married Peter Snyder Dec. 15 1862 in
Berrien County.

Death of Mrs. Snyder
Mrs. Joseph Snyder has been ill for several months and her friends have
considered her beyond permanent help for some time. It was not, therefore, a
cause for surprise when they heard that she was dead.
Mary Elizabeth Colvin was born in Buchanan township in 1841 and there grew up
to womanhood and was married to Joseph Snyder in 1860. About 1876 the family
removed to the west and for eighteen years lived in Kansas, Nebraska and Dakota
but retuned in 1894 and purchased a fine farm in Berrien township that has since
been their hom. Five children have been born to them, all living. They are:
Lawrence W., J.W., J.B., Leslie C. and Lillie, wife of Sanford Collins of North
Bend, Neb. Lawrence is at Vicksburg, Miss., in the employ of a great lumber
company, The other sons are now at home. Lawrence came in time to see his
mother before her death and will return in a few days; Mrs. Collins could not be
present. Mrs. Snyder leaves three surviving brothers and a sister. They are
Austin W. Colvin of this place, Thos. J. of Shelby, this state, Sam W. of
Memphis, Tenn., and Mrs. Perlina Palmer of Denison, Texas.
Mrs. Snyder has been a faithful mother to her children and her efforts for her
family had won her the respect of all who know her. She was a woman of stately,
fine appearance and her social position was a good one.
She died Friday, Nov. 10, 1899, and was buried the next day from Long Lake
church, Rev. Wm. Roe of Buchanan conducting the service. A choir went from this
village and assisted in the solemn ceremony. A large attendance of neighbors
and friends atttested the regard in which the deceased was held.
