WAS ONE OF THE EARLY SETTLERS HERE
John Darling Once Conducted Hotel on Nisbett Block Corner.
From Saturday's Daily Pioneer
John Darling, father of A.E. and E.J. Darling, of this city, died this morning
at 7 o'clock, at the home of his daughter, Mrs. Herbert Friant, at Shelby. He
was 81 years old, and old age was the chief cause of his death.
For seven or eight years up to about a year ago he lived in Denver, with his
daughter, Jennie Solomon. His health then began to break down and he came
back to Michigan to die.
Mr. Darling was a resident of BIg Rapids for eight or ten years in its
earliest days. He came here about 1863, and was proprietor for many years of
the only hotel here at the time, known as the Darling House, located on the
corner of Michigan avenue Maple street, where the Nisbett Block now stands.
He also had the distinction of driving the first stage coach from here to
Hersey, being engaged in that business in the early days, before he bought the
hotel. He made trips to Hersey twice a week.
Besides the two daughters mentioned he is survived by two sons, both of this
city, E.J. and A.E. Darling.
Mr. and Mrs. E.J. Darling left this afternoon for Shelby to attend the
funeral, which will be held Monday forenoon. The burial will be held at
Plainfield, to which place he moved.

Funeral Services. - Funeral services were held Tuesday afternoon fro Mrs.
Elizabeth Griffith from the Wagner Funeral Home, and were attended by
relatives and many friends, evidence of the many kindly contacts she had made
during her long residence in Mecosta County. After the death of her husband
Mrs. Griffith left her farm home in Van Gilder district and came to this city
to make her home with her niece, the late Mrs. Gladys Harter, for whom she had
cared since Mrs. Harter's infancy. After the death of Mrs. Harter she had
made her home with her nieces, Mrs. Guy Robison and Mrs. Hazel Carver, and her
nephew, Harvey Fitzgerald. Until her last illness her activities and
conversational ability belied her 89 years.

Owosso Michigan
Carl Ringer was my grandfather and he was from Austria. He came into the US
with my grandmother Albina in 1913. They had two children, my mother Ann and
her little sister Rosie (Bila) Ringer. Carl Ringer hurt his leg in an
accident at work. The injury was so bad that it appeared his leg would be
removed. Out of fear Carl Ringer committed suicide. He was only 36 years old.
His grave is in Oak Hill Cemetary in Owosso Michigan. It is grave#5, row 9,
section K. He does not have a marker. Next to him is my grandmother Albina
Ringer Houska and she died June 5, 1923, age 37 and her grave is #31, row 6
section K. My mother and her sister were raised by their Aunt Cecila Hersch
and she was also was from Austria and she and her wonderful family lived in
Cheasning on a farm.

Flint Michigan Marvel-Schebler carburetor plant blast
Bernard (Jack) Hanlon was born in Missouri and was my father's brother. My
father was Thomas James Hanlon. My uncle Jack was killed in a Marvel-Schebler
carburetor plant explosion. His foreman Frank Waider age 50 died four hours
after the explosion. My uncle lived longer, but was severly burned. There is
an article regarding this explosion in the Flint Free Press in May 1945. I do
not know any other information as I was a small child living with my parents
in Indiana and I know we traveled to Flint to be with Uncle Jack. He and my
father were very close. My Dad said the two of them jumped on a train and
rode it to Michigan to hunt for a job. It was depression time. This probably
was about 1935 or 1936. My father met my mother in Flint and Uncle Jack
married a lady who had a daughter named Barbara. I did not know them. The
funeral took place at St. Michael's Church and Mnsgr, Maurice Chawke was the
clergyman. Uncle Jack's final resting place is Flint Memorial Park
Cemetery.
