Around 1707 the Maryland Assembly passed a law for the creation of a town
and erection of a courthouse on land called Taylor's Choice. This was the
town of Joppa, named for the port of biblical Joppa mentioned in the books
of Acts.
Because of some problems with the Queen of England and other difficulties,
the town did not become official until 1724. It was located at the neck of
land at the mouth of the Gunpowder River where the present Joppatown is
located. The port of Joppa, which was its mainstay, slowly filled with silt
to a point where it could not support sea trade vessels and the town
eventually died. Joppa Road was created to connect Joppa and Baltimore. Well
not created for some of the course was actually a Susquehannock and Shawnee
Indian trail used until around 1675.
