Jean,
Orphanages and many other institutions are listed in the Baltimore City
Directories, but the inhabittants are not listed individually. The 1899
Directory listed the following orphanges that appear to be Catholic:
St. Francis Orphan Asylum
Cor. Forest Pl & Chase St
In charge of the Ob;ate Sisters of Providence
St.Patrick's Orphan Asylum
1707 Gough St
St. Peter's Orphan Asylum
1221 Myrtle Av
St. Vincent's Infant Asylum
Cor Lafayette Av & Division St
St. Vincent dePaul Orphan Asylum
112 n Front St
Under the charge of the Brothers of the Christian Schools
There were others specifically for "colored" or girls and some others not
named after saints, so probably not Catholic. If you have access to
Directories, institutions are usually all listed together in an Appendix in
the back.

Subject: [MDGEN] City directories and orphanages in Baltimore
Would an orphanage and its inhabitants be listed in city
directories?
My grandfather was born 1882 in Baltimore and put into a Catholic
Orphanage. I was
told that in later years that the orphanage burned down.
With a common surname of WHITE and a big city like Baltimore, it is
overwhelming to
do research for that name. However knowing it was a
Catholic Orphanage and that it burned down seems like strong points for
research. He was taken out of the orphanage by a family named CARR and went
to Carroll or Howard Co. when he was 12 years old.
Any help you could give for tacking down more facts on orphanages and
fires would
be greatly appreciated.
