Turnor Wootton, born about 1690 near Annapolis (London Towne), is the
ancestor of most of the Maryland Wootton family, but how he got here is
a mystery. Although he is said to be the "first documented" Wootton in
Maryland, actually several wills were probated from Woottons in Calvert
County, MD in the 1690's. One was the will of Simon Wotton of Calvert
Co. MD who died in Jamaica, probate to Thomas Wharton or Whaton ( Dec.
1696). The next is the will of Anne Wotton in March of 1698, probably
of the same family. She is of Calvert Co. Md and described as a
"spinster" so not a child or maiden, but of some age. Administration
went to her mother, Susanna Wotton, Widow ( perhaps of Simon?) This
info from English Estates of American Colonists, 1610-1699 by Peter
Wilson Coldham.
Turnor's descendants often bore the name "Singleton". A Singleton
family was at Glouscester, VA in the early 1600's, and no intermarriage
with a Singleton family is found in MD.so that could be the link. The
names Turner and Singleton are found in Wootton given names in both MD
and VA. Can't find the Turnor, Turner link. It may predate the American
Woottons.
Any information or leads? I am researching a historic site called
"Wootton's Mill" near Rockville MD as the city is celebrating its 200th
anniversary next year and honoring its early families. We have a city
park called "Wootton's Mill Park" which will have interpretation,
including a family history, and Thomas Sprigg Wootton High School is
nearby as well as Wootton Parkway, etc. I work for the city as a
historian and preservation planner. The Veirs, (Viers, Veers, etc.)
family is also associated with the site and intermarried with the
Woottons in Montgomery County, as did most older families..
