Subject: Re: [MDGEN] MD Birth/Death Records
This is going to sound like a dumb question, but I am confused and hope
someone can help. I have never been to the Maryland Archives, but hope to
go there one day. When links are given to the archives to look up birth and
death records, etc., you find a series of lists that give dates, description
numbers, accession numbers and MSA numbers. If I were to go to the
archives, would I need the accession numbers to find what I am looking for.
Any help on this will be greatly appreciated. As I said, I have never been
to the archives--I live in South Carolina now, but am planning a trip there
soon.

Here is a link to MD Archives page re: birth records,
what is existing and where they are held:

Someone born in 1820 or so - you're going to be
looking for church records, family bible records, I'd
even look (if possible) for tombstone records.
It was law in the colonial days that all births,
deaths, marriages being recorded in the official
Episcopal parish church. After the Maryland's
constitution was enacted in 1776 the law lost it's
effect - some churches did continue to record vital
stats but it was no longer law. It was 1865 before the
first attempt was made to begin officially recording
births/deaths/marriages in MD but after 1898 before
compilance was really in gear.
