There is a Riverboat Museum in Dubuque, Iowa right on the dock that has

I have a relative born in Alabama about 1830 who became a ships
captain on
over 100 packet steamers that plied the Mississippi and Ohio Rivers as well
as several trips to South America, all during the 1845-1890 timeframe.
Where did you find the ships documents for your ancestor? Did such trips to
SA require passports or were they issued some sort of maritime document? I
really do not know where to begin looking. Any ideas?
TIA
