Since I posted all of those obits and marriages a few days ago I've had
several questions asking if I have access to the Sun for other lookups.
Unfortunately the answer to that is no (I wish I did - then I'd be able
to do my lookups whenever I wanted!). I go on research trips to
Baltimore every few months, look at the microfilms of the Sun for obits
for my ancestors, and many other obits come along on the copy when I
print it. So, to increase my genealogy "karma," I transcribe the pages
of obits and post them here. They've been helpful to enough people that
I figure I'm building up some good credit in the "genealogy
breakthroughs" bank. My day will come for the brick walls to come down!!
For those needing a lookup, you might want to start with the various
GenWeb pages where Cyndie, Gayle and Lee have been collecting obituaries
posted here on these lists. Those websites are:
http://www.rootsweb.com/~usgenweb/md/baltimore/obits.htm
http://www.rootsweb.com/~mdbaltim/obits/obits.htm
http://www.rootsweb.com/~mdcbalti/Obits.html
You might get lucky and find a date or name that you need.
Also, the Baltimore County page
(
http://www.rootsweb.com/~mdbaltim/obits/obits.htm) has many other
suggestions for where to look to find obituaries you are searching for.
This page also gives instructions for how to get the Pratt library to do
a lookup for you and mail it to you.
Finally, when I go on research trips, I often post offers to do lookups
while I'm there. I'm probably going down again in July or August, but I
haven't set the date for sure yet. Watch the list and look for my
offer. I charge price of the copy (20¢ per page for obits at Pratt, 50¢
per page for death certs at MD State Archives) plus postage. Certainly
a better price than the State Archives wants for a death cert through
the mail ($12 each)
Feel free to email with any questions you may have. I'm always happy to
share info and experience with beginners. I've only been at this for 3
years, but it's amazing what you can learn about how to find the records
you're looking for in that short time.
