Cynthia,
Do any of your ancestors ever spell it without the 'r' as in Schaaf?

Subject: [MDGEN] Roll Call: Balto City -- Scharf/Scarf/Scarff
Researching the Scharf/Scarf/Scarff family. First emigrant was
Nicholas
Scarf (1675-1753) who came from Bavaria to Calvert County. (The family
supposedly originated in Amsterdam.)
One of Nicholas' sons was Henry Scarf(f) (1708-1801) who moved to Harford
County. One of his sons was William Scarff -- we're not sure why the name
changed with these first few generations. His son was William Scarff II
(1749-1778) who came to Baltimore County and married Elizabeth Harrison.
Their son was William J. Scharf (1767-1840) who was married to Susannah
Christopher.
The famous historian John Thomas Scharf (1843-1898) is a member of this
family.
Most of the members of the family by the 19th century appear to
have settled in Baltimore City.
Surnames associated with the Scharf/Scarf/Scarff family are:
Arnold
Brown
Christopher
Eich
Harrison
Hasselman
Joyner

(granddaughter of Thomas Marion Scharf, Sr., ggrandaughter of George
