Hi Elizabeth, The Little Wedding Chapel goes back to around the 1700's, but
there is only records at the courthouse, as each minister from the chapel
took the records with them when they left. In the late 1920's thru' the
1930's, is when it was officially known for weddings. In 1939 a law was
made that said all signs for weddings had to come down, ( there was 12
places on main street to be married), but because , the little wedding
chapel, had the word chapel in it, it was allowed to stay up, at this time
also there had to be a waiting period, as before there was none. The
courthouse wasn't allowed to do weddings until 1960. Most of the marriages
were performed in the 1920's thru' 1930's, and after the law was passed it
slowed down. In 1920, it had a taxi company formed by Jim Short, Oscar
Humes,Tom Harlan Alfred Taylor, Bill Cann to handle all the wedding couples.
There is not a web site, but someone has put them on a
site,www.weddings-etc-by-flo.com. I have not checked this out, but I hope
it answers your question.

How far back was Elkton, MD the "marriage Capitol of the
world?" I
remember
folks going there for marriages when I was growing up and then it
seemed
to
have stopped. I would be curious to know when it began as such
though.
Thanks,
Elizabeth
