Richard Jones 35 M farmer MD

Samuel 13OH
Norval 11 OH
Elizabeth Walburn 12 OH
Granville Walburn 10 OH
Checked the Meigs County Museum, P0 Box 145 Pomeroy OH 46769 for marriages and Births.
They are no longer allowing copies to be made of the actual old manage records. The
records contain no additional information than what is in We. Cochran's marriages of
Meigs County, OH except the name of the justice of the peace or minister who married them.
The Museum will type out an official document verifying the information it you send the
Pages from Wee Cochran, the exact names and dates for a fee of 3.00 per page.
This is the information you should include:
Merriages of Meigs County, OH 1819-l9l3 by Wes Oilman
p. 44. Richard Jones married Elizabeth Walburn (widow) 21 March 1844
p. 115 Norvall Jones married Louisa Hampton 9 April 1858
p. 25 John Walburn married Elizabeth Mark (s) 2 march 1837
p. 138 Patrick McCann married Elizabeth Jones 8 Jan 1862
I did not find a Louisa Jones married to a Townstend in Meigs County nor did I find
Louisa Hampton married to a Townsend. The only explanation I can think of for why Solomon
Townstend is living with Novae on the 1870 census is that there were several Townsend
families nearby. Frequently, families helped each other out when the, mother was ill. They
may have been doing that for one of the neighbors.
The marriage of Richard Jones to Elizabeth Walburn, widow of John Walburn In 1844
indicates taut Richard Jones was in Meg. county at that time. Birthplace of his two elder
children indicate that they were born about 1837 and 1839 respectively in Ohio. 1 checked
the Ohio 1840 census index for Richard Jones' and found several in the counties
surrounding Meigs County. I hand checked each entry on the 1840 actual microfilm and could
not match any of those Richard Jones' with your Richard Jones. He should have been
about 25 years old (20-30 age range) and showing two males under the age of Five but none
of the ones I found matched that description. I also checked the Virginia, now WV counties
for him along the Ohio River with out any luck. Unless he was using acme other first name,
I don't know what to tell you.
I did not hew access to the original 1860 and 1870 Meigs County census but I have sent
copies of the transcribed pages for your use. The 1870 use has neither Norvall or Patrick
McCann family in evidence.
On 29 August 1861, Richard Jones made out his last will and testament (copy enclosed) In
it he names his wile, Elizabeth, he does not name his children by name but refers to them
as his heirs, by 15 August 1862. The will s probated, See the, will for of Patrick McCann
and John McKinstry. If you look at the day of the will writing and the marriage of his
widow to Patrick McCann, it can be concluded that Richard Jones died between 29 August
1861 and Jan 8, 1862. I searched the Meigs county newspapers between these dates for an
obituary without any luck. Death records in this time period were spotty at best. No
official records were kept until 1867. Mortality indexes only were kept for the year prior
to the, census, i.e., 1859-80 tar the census year 1860.
In conducting the deed search, I checked for the first mention of Richard Jones in the
Meigs County deed books. I also chocked the Washington Co, Oh deed books for him In
Marietta because Meigs wasn't formed until 1819. The first mention I found of Richard
Jones was dated 7 October 1851 when Jackson Walburn transferred land to him. Other land
transfers came from Jonathan Walburn on 23 August 1862 and William Walburn 29 march 1863.
I am not certain that the deed transferred by Valentine Horton
and Samuel Pomeroy actually refers to the Sarme Richard Jones.
What this leads me to believe is that he owned no land until the settlement of the
Walburn properties came to him as Elizabeth's husband.
In addition to deeds to Richard Jones, I found several that seem to relate to his
children and to him.
Volume 23, p. 563. Richard and Elizabeth Jones to Elias Davis Tot 160 dollars , the
south east corner of 80 acres, traction 30 range 15, township 9, 26 April 1861. He signed

Columbia Township, 80 acres more or less, Western 1/2 of 160 acres, fraction 30, Ohio land
Company purchase. Richard Jones is listed as the Justice of the Peace for this
transaction. (After 9-1852)
Vol.26 page 389, Norvall purchased property from William Vernon et at, the heirs of
Samuel D. Vernon for 500 dollars, east traction 34 Section 28 township 9 range 15 of the

Volume 35 . 325
Norvall and Louisa Jones sold to Brad Hampton for 50 dollars, 80 acres Columbia Township,

dated 25 August 1869. Which seems to be when they left Meigs County.
Vol.35 p.326 Richard Jones Jr. and Wife Asenath, transferred property to B. Hampton for
110 dollars 80 Acres fraction 30, range 15, township 9, section 21 Lot 262. The deed was
signed in Wisconsin, Richard County, dated 30 May 1867. This being the same section that
Samuel and Liza had sold to Richard Jones in Volume 28 above. (I can't find this
marriage in Meigs County so he may have married after he left)
Poll tax records.
John Walburn appeared on 9 October 1832 in Columbia Township arid 15 September 1832.
Richard Jones appears 15 October 1845 In Columbia Township. Other records don't show
him but not all township. have existing records.
Guardianship:
Richard Jones Jr was aged 17 on the 20th day of may 1864 according to his guarianship
papers. I don't know why he has papers and the other minor children do not. I have
enclosed the guardianship papers as Patrick McCann was named has guardian and it has to do
with property disposal. Note that Richard's acknowledgement of the notice was signed
by Granville Walburn and Patrick McCann.
On the 1860 census, there are two Patrick McCann's living nearby the Jones. Since I
haven't been able to locate them on the 1870 census, I'm not sure which one is the
correct Patrick. I copied both for you.
I found this on the 1880 Census, Microfilm #1264684 T9-0684 p.572B.

I found one of Norvel and Louisa's children's births in the online
transcription. It actually says Veral and Louisa but hat me my misreading of what the
ledger said. The others weren't there but it could just be that Sharon and I missed
them as we were transribing records. I've included the microfilm number to order. You
can order it at the nearest Later Day Saints Family History Center for a small fee.

Notes for RICHARD JONES:
Last Will and Testament, 8/29/1861, Meigs County, Ohio:
In the name of the benevolent father of all, I Richard Jones of Meigs County do make and
publish this my last will and testament. I give and devise to my beloved wife in lieu of

State of Ohio, containing about sixty four acres, during her natural life, and all the
stock, household goods, furniture, provisions and other goods and chattel which may be
thereon at the time of my decease during her natural life as aforesaid, she however
selling so much thereof as may be sufficient to pay my just debts; at the death of my said
wife the real estate aforesaid and all stock, household goods, furniture, provisions, and
other goods and chattel which may remain at the death of my said wife, I give and devise
to my heirs that survive the death of my said wife to be divided equal amongst them, this
August 29th AD 1861, offered and acknowledged by said Richard Jones as his last will and
testament in
our presence and signed by us in his presence, John ___, Richard ___ and Joseph ___.
Notes - Greg Sevelis, Aug 2003
Most of what I have on Richard Jones came in a 1986 letter from Selma Bonewald of
Waterford, WI, who is descended through his stepdaughter Electa Walburn. She was able to
provide me a copy of the record of his 3/21/1844 marriage to Elizabeth (Mark) Walburn.
Judging from Elizabeth's third marriage on 1/8/1862 to Patrick McCann still in Meigs
County, it is most reasonable to assume that the elder Richard died within weeks (maybe
days) after his 8/29/1861 will and was buried in or near Columbia Township, but I have no
further information. The location of the 64 acres mentioned in the will could provide a
clue. It is not clear if this land is in any way connected to her inheritance from first
husband John Walburn. The 5/7/1848 recording of the land conveyance pursuant to his will
describes the real estate as follows: "a tract of land containing 80 acres more or
less being in the W ½ of the W 160 acres of fraction 30 Ohio Co land in Columbia Twp Meigs
Co Ohio." Fraction 30
is located just about in the center of Columbia Township. According to the present-day
Meigs County highway map, there are eight cemeteries in Columbia Township - Half Acre
(#2), Rawlings (#8), Ogdin (#13), School Lot (#16), Lebanon (#24), Temple (#24), Mt Olive
(#25) and Castor (#32). I took a quick scan through Lebanon and Temple, but no luck.

There were no formal birth records in 1810. Records began in 1875 for
Baltimore City and later than that for the counties. That said, you may
want to check church records, if you know the county in which your
Richard Jones was born. Also, have you checked for his death
certificate? Sometimes they have birth info too. Finally, check for an
obituary. In small towns, they can contain a wealth of information.

HI List;
I am desperate for information about birth records around 1810. I
have a for-bearer that we think was born in Maryland in 1810 as listed
on his sons death record. This is the best information that I can find
over the last 20 years and with a name like Richard Jones I need help.
Any help !!!!!!!!
