The us government uses this system and the state of Maryland. I am not sure
about other states but it would make sense to assume they do. For example my
license starts with F240 which my last name starts with F. I noticed that
when searching the records the F240 covered people with the letter with the
first letter F in their last names. This makes it easy in your search. It
seems that this F240 is a soundex or index that the local and federal people
use. Do you still have your draft card? I bet the first four digits are the
same as on your license. Very smart on their end to utilize these letters
and numbers to identify each of us. Scary though! The draft card comment is
for males only as you apparently know but that may change soon too. Contact
me if I can be of further assistance.

When it was said they go by the first letter of your name and the first
three numbers of your driver's license, is that only if you have a Maryland
driver's license? Or do they actually use the soundex and not the driver's
license at all? I am planning a trip to Baltimore the end of July and am
hoping to visit the archives in Annapolis. I too would appreciate any help
in hints for looking up records. Thanks.

Yes, they use the soundex system and the years are progressive. You
probably
need to see the counter person and they should help you but this help
is
limited. You must do 99% of the work. The soundex will give you the index
number to look at the film. Save your numbers because these numbers you
will
use for state records and federal records. Remember the letter and
the
first
three numbers are your gate way for searching any records. If I can
be of
any further help just e-mail me.

Do they go by Soundex? No, they are not the same last name as mine!! Are
the microfilms listed in years...I'm trying to figure out the best way to
make the most of my time.
Thanks again.
