Just a thought, but not too far away in Waldorf (Charles County), is Mattawoman Beantown
Road (near the 301/Route 5 split), which might be a better place to look for Mattawoman
Church? it looks like about 4 or 5 miles between Piscataway and Mattawoman Beantown Road,
if you take Danville, Accokeek and McKendree Roads in between, but I've never driven
that route.
Good luck!
Mollie

Subject: [MDGEN] Mattawoman Church Cemetery
Hello Everyone -
was wondering if any of you know where the Mattawoman Church Cemetery
s/was located. I'm searching for an ancestor was died in 1839. His will was
robated in Prince George's County, but he owned land in both PG and Charles
ounties; in fact, he lived in Charles County until probably 1810 when he
oved to PG County. Tom Gardiner's book says that Ignatius Gardiner is
believed to have been buried in the Mattawoman Church Cemetery which stood
ear the
estern most area of Townshend and the eastern most area of Piscataway." I
ound an old cemetery that has a lot of Townshends in it, have visited St.
ary's Church in Piscataway and looked at their records, have visited St.
ohn's
n Clinton because the pastor at St. Mary's said that St. John's had their
arly records, but none of their books go back farther than 1873. Because I
now there are small cemeteries in the woods all over the counties, I just
ondered if anyone knew where this one might be. One of my references said
hat
attawoman Church was within three miles of St. Mary's "on the Middleton
arm" but so far, the only Middleton Farm I know about is the one in Charles
ounty that wraps around St. Peter's Church....I haven't found one in Prince
eorge's County yet. My sister-in-law has been terrific in finding me the
robable geographic area to search and finding tax records that point me in the
direction of the people who own my ancestor's land today. I'm in Southern
aryland until Wednesday when we have to fly back to Colorado, so have been
esearching in the Southern Maryland Studies Room and visiting as many sites as
an find that seem to be related. I've called family and friends, too,
ttempting to piece together information from other minds and memories. I know
Ignatius is out there somewhere...
hank you for any guidance you can offer.
