It is confusing, especially since Kent County was formed in 1642 and included
Kent Island, but Queen Annes County was formed in 1706, in part from Kent,
and I guess it got the Island. So the records from the late 1600s and 1704
(when James was born), were from Kent County, though by the time he died in 1740,
it was Queen Anne's Co, even though it was still Coxes Neck on Kent Island.
Yes, it is confusing, and I need to clean up my records a bit to clarify it.

I actually just got a very good clue in a Wilds will.My John Carrow in 1693
living on that(Wilds) property in Duck Creek,DE.He is there with his son in
1800 census and not in 1810.I am assuming he died then as his son(Mine )
married in 1811.
My always big problem is where where they between 1700 and when I see some
evidence in say 1755.Since I have QA Militia Rolls for John Carrow it would
be nice.<smile>
Also is where exactly did they come into MD.I have an Evan Cariow in St
Mary's County & Cecil County(Sheriff) in 1678-1683 and Henry Carew the
priest at St Ingoes in 1674-1679.Then poof!Vanished
My Timothy came into MD in 1680-1682 . I would like to link them nicely and
live happily ever after but guess its not to be.
Maryland records at least have fairly easy spelling.Trying to find an heir
for Timothy(D 1700) I have to look at Carow/Carrone/Kairone/Kerom/Ocharon
and I just found one for Timothy Oharon that looks suspicious.Thats why I
look for the other families as "traveling buddies".
Some say it is the Dutch influence in the Court records.I'm sure that the
Irish dialect had a lot to do with it.
You all have helped immensely

Remember too, Kent Island used to be part of Kent Co. So dont let that throw
you off when looking for them here in Queen Anne's Co. I aso remember that
the farmhouse that existed near Stevensville on Kent Island, where the Kent
Island Library now stands, used to be referred to as the "Ringgold Farm."
Not much here except I do remember Mrs. Carrie and Mr. Sam
Ringgold.....relatives I guess carrying on the name. They lived in Chester MD around 1950 which
is on Kent Island. Sam had brothers named Bernard (still living) and Thomas.
He also had two sons whose names I cannot recall.
I have not done any research on those families but I do recognize the names
and went to school with all but any named Carrow. While I am aware of that
name, I can't recall anyone having lived in my time with that last name....only
as a first or middle name.
Have you been able to find them on the census? Or at least that very old
enumeration here in the county...it seems I recall seeing a document from about
1798 and it must have been in the Centreville library. Sorry I am not much
help.

pounds current money of MD and naming Thomas Ringgold as heir after
expenses. He also names household goods to Mary Arnold
Mary His wife on 11/25/1762 leaves To: Mary Blunt daughter, William Ringgold
grandson, Mary Richardson grandaughter, James Blunt grandson, Thomas
Ringgold Jr great grandson and son of Thomas Ringgold.
Would LOVE to know relationships there since this could be one of my John
Carrows.

Following names included in this posting: BARRON, BENNY, BLADES, BROWN,
CONNER, CRYER, EDMONDSON, HARRIS, LOWERY, MERRICK, MILLAN, PRICE, PROUT, RINGGOLD,
ROGERS, VAUGHAN, WALKER, WICKES, WILLOUGHBY. Mostly Kent and Talbot Counties.
Throwing some names out with some stumbling blocks to see if anyone has or
needs information on these families. I need info on most of the female lines,
and have sufficient info worth sharing on Ringgold, Merrick, Prout, and Robert
Vaughan.
From Kent County, I have Louisa Wickes RINGGOLD, daughter of Thomas Charles
Ringgold (1822-1881), son of Thomas Ringgold of Queen Anne's County (b. 1799),
son of Thomas Ringgold (1745-1816), son of William Ringgold (1729-1790), son
of James Ringgold of Coxes Neck back in Kent (1704-1740), son of James Ringgold
of Talbot (1671-1704), son of Major James Ringgold (1626-1686), who
immigrated with his father Thomas Ringgold (1609-1672)in 1650.
Sarah MILLAN married Thomas Charles Ringgold. Ancestry of her parents,
William Millan and Mary Ann WICKES (married in 1823), has proved a stumbling block.
Rebecca BROWN married William Ringgold in 1741. All I know about her parents
is they were Dr. Isaac and Margaret Brown.
Mary LOWERY married Thomas Ringgold in 1726 in St. Paul's Church. I know
nothing about her parentage.
James Ringgold of Talbot married Mary HARRIS, daughter of Moses and Mary
Harris, before 1700.
Major James Ringgold in 1673 married Mary VAUGHAN, daughter of Captain Robert
Vaughan, about whom much is written.
In Talbot County, I follow this MERRICK line:
Daniel MERRICK (1645-1726) immigrated to Talbot County, possibly from
Virginia.
His son John Merrick (d. 1709) married Jane WALKER, daughter of Daniel and
Alce (sic) Walker.
Their son James Merrick (1690-1760) married Elizabeth BARRON in 1713.
Their son James Merrick, Jr. (d. 1799) married Mary CONNER.
Their son Mathias (b. 1745) married Rebekah ROGERS, possibly related to
Michal Rogers.
Their son James (1780-1845) married Elizabeth BLADES.
Their son Daniel (1814-1882) married Sarah EDMONDSON in 1840.
Their son Thaddeus (b 1866) married Carrie BENNY, daughter of William R.
(Frank) Benny, son of Thomas Benny and Henrietta PRICE (married 1832). Carrie's
mother Mary Anne Elizabeth CRYER (1843-1907) was daughter of Capt. William
Cryer (1800-1875) and Sarah Ann Leonard (1815-1857). William's parents were Jacob
Cryer and Sarah (Sally) WILLOUGHBY.
Thaddeus Merrick's family moved to California between 1910 and 1920, in the
Pasadena area. His daughter Mary Merrick (1894-1975) was my grandmother. She
married Carrow Tolson PROUT (1885-1961) in 1913 after he went to California to
fetch her, and they returned to Maryland.

The Downs family has been researched and there is a whole book on that family
in the library in Centreville...it's in the genealogy section up against the
side wall just in case you get the chance to look it up.

According to the family, the preacher Carrow Tolson was NOT related to the
Prout family, but was simply very inspiring and the parents decided to name the
child after him.
CT Prout was the 3rd son, born in 1885. His mother, Louisa Wickes Ringgold,
was from Millington, in Kent County (I think I said Queen Anne before, but
that was wrong). She moved to Ann Arundel County around 1870 as a school teacher,
which is apparently where she met Edmund Janes Prout, and they married. They
had a girl Mary Etta (Manie) in 1877, a boy Charles Herbert in 1879, another
boy William Leslie in 1883, then my grandfather Carrow Tolson in 1885,
followed by two more girls (Louise Ringgold and Edna Millan) in 1888 and 1891.
I haven't researched to find out what circuit the Methodist preacher Carrow
Tolson followed, or if he was a traveling preacher.
Mollie
Been trying to post for 3 days!Hope I figured it out.
Wondering if Carrow Tolson Prout was a relative of Carrow Tolson the
preacher?
I also found today Jo.Carrow in 1793 living on the property of Nathanial
Wilds in Duck Creek DE.That definitely should be my 4thgreat Grandfather.
His brother(?)William Carrow's daughter (Maria Carrow Downs of Downs Chapel)
married a Wilds...who are also from MD?
Lots of interconnection.

I'm forwarding the message below regarding an upcoming cemetery cleanup day.
Any responses should be sent to Mary Ellen Wilmoth at wilmoth(a)crosslink.net
There will be a meeting of those interested in the cemetery cleanup project
this coming Monday evening, April 11th, at 7:00 PM at Peace Lutheran Church,
401 East Smallwood Drive, Waldorf.
For those of you that we have not seen for awhile, the Charles County
Maryland Genealogical Society received a grant from the Historic Trust of
Charles County to begin updating the circa 1976 inventory of the cemeteries
in Charles County. Many of these cemeteries are on private property long
abandoned and in need of some basic cleanup like trash removal, weed
cutting, etc. in order for volunteers to take digital photos and record
each tombstone (part of the U. S. Tombstone Restoration Project).
The Charles County Chapter of Thrivent Financial For Lutherans (a fraternal
benefit society) has dedicated its Join Hands Day 2005 projects to joining
hands with the gen. society and others to begin the cleanup of these
cemeteries.
If you are interested in helping with the cleanup of the cemeteries on
Saturday morning May 7th, or at some future date, you are encouraged to
attend the planning meeting on April 11th.
If you have not attended a gen. society meeting lately, Christine Emond is
coordinating the inventory portion and will be telling us which cemeteries
we have permission to go on and cleanup and which ones we still need
permission, etc.
Hope to see all of you at the meeting Monday evening at 7:00 PM. As usual,
if you have questions about the cleanup or need directions to Peace Lutheran
Church, please do not hesitate to email me at wilmoth(a)crosslink.net

The Genealogy Nut
Tolson is a very old name on Kent Island. I believe there was a Tolson with
the original party of William Claiborne who settled on the south end of Kent
Island around 1631. When I went to school the books said the first settlement
in Maryland was St Mary's City, but we knew there had actually been a
settlement on Kent Island a little before that. As I recall there was a dispute over
this land. It was given to William Claiborne and "re-given" to the
Carrolls--something about religion there and a change in England. Somewhere I have a
list of the names of the people who settled with William Claiborne. When the
settlement was forced to disperse the men settled up and down the Chesapeake
Bay area. I can recall a few of the names which have remained in this
area....Ringgold, Crouch, Legg and I do believe, Tolson..I'm quite sure of that. There
was even a Tolson farm in that area as late as 1950 but it is now a housing
development. The Claiborne settlement was about 2 miles past that farm and was
called Kent Fort Manor. The original house does not exist but about ten years
ago they found what is believed to be the base of the buildings. As for the
Tolson farm, I recall a VERY old house which was torn down about 15 years ago.
I went to school with some of the Tolson children. Something I noticed when
researching my own family who lived in that area around 1840 was that the
"farms" listed in the census were valued at that time at 15,000, 20,000 and
25,000 dollars. Far more that the 500 and 800 dollars elsewhere in the county. I
suppose the size of the farms could be the reason, yet I think up county they
would have been big also. Another puzzle, huh? Also, this area is directly
across the Chesapeake Bay from Annapolis which is a very old town and probably
a very important seaport at the time.
When they built a new library here on Kent Island they supplied a file area
for any "local" families to share photos and whatever on their families. I
have gone through these drawers but cant particularly remember Tolson. If I find
out there is such a folder, I will let you know.

The dealine for getting your money in for the reunion is
rapidly arriving.
April 15th for money, April 24th for reunion.
Plenty of parking and room to spread out with your family,
pictures, and memorabilia.
ANNOUCEMENT:
We now have charts covering EVERYONE that Kitty has in her
database. The chart from last year has not, however, been
updated so the new people Kitty has added to her own line
will be covered in a listing.
The new charts add up to about 220' (yes, that is feet) of
charts. Adding that to the 30 feet of the Thomas M.
Norwood chart, we now have charts totaling 250'.
We have also put together a listing of everyone's name
with on what chart(s) they appear. Because of how the
charts needed to be created (there is a 30' limit per
chart) this could mean a group could appear on more than
one chart. If, however, a person is related twice to the
same chart group, they will appear on that chart once with
full information and the other times with just their name
and the note "This is a duplicate person". If you see this
look for them on the same chart again closer to the top.
Come spend some time finding your ancestors and YOURSELF.
If you are not there or your information is wrong, then
you haven't sent it to Kitty (or she has made a
mistake--NO, can't be that).
Don't forget to bring pictures and other family
information to share and scan. Let's get this right.
Now, Kitty--About who you have as the children for Nehemia
Moxley and Elizabeth Norwood---hmmmmmmm.

Just to add a little more to the Carrow mix....
My grandfather's name was Carrow Tolson Prout. According to family lore, he
was named for a Methodist preacher on the Maryland Eastern Shore named Carrow
Tolson, who was apparently very inspiring (in the late 1800s).
My grandfather's mother was from Queen Anne County on the Eastern Shore, and
his father was from Calvert County on the Western Shore. Both families were
ardent Methodists.

I have DeValingers book on loan.In DE I find Thomas Harris being granted 400 acres in Nov 1680 and Hennery Harris 400 acres in Dec 1680.The circumstances suggests that they may actually have settled the land by 1676 or so.
I find David(Dauid) Morgan settling 400 acres at the same time called "Leason".George,Henry& William Morgan registering cattle ear marks. There was also a Rece Morgan.
I think they went way back together.

(PS I tried to post this last night and don't know where it went)
Another thought....are you from Delaware? Not only did the state line move
but it is possible in certain areas on the Delmarva Peninsula to have lived in
the same spot for many years but be counted in the State of Maryland, the
State of Delaware and in three counties of Maryland as more counties were formed
from each other not to mention the DE counties involved. Are you aware that
the line between MD & DE is part of the Mason Dixon Line even though it goes
North and South then East and West again? A lot of people think the M & D Line
was only between MD & PA.
Kay Seward Roser, Stevensville, MD
(Kent Island)
It is my understanding that the Harris family that I have known growing up in
Queen Anne's County, was from Delaware many years ago, but I have no actual
knowledge of that. I believe a very old woman in the neighborhood told me
that just before she died at age 97. I can recall a Kennard Harris, Holton
Harris, Hugh Harris (married to my Father's aunt)...these first names seem to be
family names...there are others too with more usual names.
Isn't it fun trying to put these pieces together? In every census my family
always said everyone was born in MD...every year until the 1870 census when my
gggrandfather had apparently died, when they indicated that he had been born
in INDIANA!!!! Yet I remember as a young girl in a very small town, a man
came to the general store looking for my family. He said he was from Indiana and
was related to us. I wish I knew the details now but what did I care at age
8??? Have fun.
