Can anyone tell me if there is a Russian Genealogy Society in Baltimore?
I am searching for the parents of Catherine Charles. Parents are said to have immigrated from Russia...this is unverified....and if so believe the name may have been changed. Any help greatly appreciated. Thank you.

If I'm not going about this right, please forgive me--and straighten
me out. Thanks.
Henry Carter is (was) my g-g-g-grandfather. What I know for sure is
that in 1814, Henry bought a tavern from the widow of Richard Choate.
Said tavern was located at Carter's Crossroads, later known as Porters,
and was situated somewhere near the present town of Eldersburg in
Carroll County. In fact, Henry and his wife Mary are buried at the
little Wesley Chapel in Eldersburg. Henry, born c.1754, died intestate
in 1829 and his substantial estate was administered (settled) thru five
annual accounts by his widow Mary and his son Henry. There was an
associated Chancery Court case that went on until 1839. From the
related documents I know a great deal about Henry's heirs and their
spouses. One other positive thing I know is that in 1803 Henry
purchased from Benjamin Lawrence a tract of 500 acres in Tyler county
Virginia (now West Virginia). The deed for this transaction refers to
Henry Carter of Anne Arundel County, Maryland. Henry's oldest son
William eventually purchased this land from his father. Henry paid
taxes for one year(1804), but it appears that he never lived there.
As noted above, Henry had a son Henry who is buried at Linganore
cemetery, Frederick County along with his wife Charity. Henry's
grandson and his wife, Margaret Elizabeth (Nicodemus) are also buried
there,
A couple of weeks ago I posted the information about Henry's heirs,
their spouses and their wedding dates thinking some of you descended
from the spouse lines may have traced their way back to Henry and
beyond. But narry a single bite.
What I do not know and for over 25 years have not been able to learn is
what is the maiden name of Henry's wife, Mary. Where was Henry born
and who were his parents?
There are a couple of vague tantalizing clues which I will share with
anyone who thinks they might be able to help me out.
Thanks to all of you. Chuck Carter
Hi Jan,
The list of names you have probably does not include the children's last name
just their first and middle names. Many people are given family surnames as
middle names -- myself included. As to Sarah DOUGHTY CAVILEER NEAL. Doughty
was probably the middle name given to her by her parents, Cavileer her maiden
name, and perhaps she was married prior to marrying Hinde and her 1st
husband's surname was Neal.
Just supposition but perhaps a bit of research may tie these names together.
Rebecca

I wish to thank those of you who answered my query regarding the Providence of Maryland vs Providence County. You were a "big" help in providing that bit of Maryland history.
Bev
I found this on a Google search but I am sure you can find more.
Anne Arundel County
Providence, a city on the Severn River established by the Puritans during
the mid 1600s. The Puritans that settled in Providence were invited from
Virginia by Governor Stone of Maryland. The Puritans were very eager to
leave the Colony of Virginia because there they were being bitterly
persecuted for their religious beliefs. However, once settled in Maryland
they objected bitterly to having to take an oath of fidelity to Lord
Baltimore because he was a Catholic. The town of Providence was latter
renamed to Annapolis.

Thomas James in 1769 sold his land in Northumberland Co., Va. It was listed
in the Northumberland Co., Va deed that "he was from the Providence of
Maryland". Question? Was this a reference to the "state" of Maryland? I just
read where Anne Arundel Co., Md in 1654 changed to Providence Co., could the
above be a reference to Providence Co., Md.? If is was a reference to the
county, THEN, it could be a big help in breaking through a brickwall!

Elizabeth,
I'm so glad that you had a good trip to the MD archives. Sounds like you
found quite a bit to work with. But you know that when you find one thing new
your "To Do" list only gets longer. Years ago my husband asked me when I would
be done with the genealogy "stuff". All I could do was laugh to myself and
say never. He doesn't ask any more.
Glad to have helped a little in your quest.

I was able to find the building without much difficulty. I had only done half of my online lookup work so I had to use their computers to get the films for the certificates...which didn't take much time. There are two parts for each death certificate but since I had both name and date, I didn't have to run through the system that they use for identifying last names...unlike Soundex...but everyone's input made alot of sense when you go there.
I was able to get most of my death certificates that I needed but wish I had had more time as I have more now to research! I must say that the staff there were both very pleasant and helpful and went out of their way!
Thanks to all for such wonderful help and suggestions!
Best regards,
Elizabeth
