I have been (finally!) compiling the information I have
on my RUTTER family of Baltimore. I knew I had one sea
captain, Solomon RUTTER, but when I starting putting
things together, I realized that shipping and trade
were a family business for several branches of the
family. Sometimes it was trade in the Caribbean, with
Cuba the hub. Sometimes it was trade with India and China.
I would like to know more. I've been googling my
fingers off and have not hit on the right keywords. My
family pre-date the clipper ships - they were sailing
on packet ships. The time frame seems to be between
late 1700s and about 1830. They were related to the
BARNEY family, also in the shipping trade, and one
branch was in partnership as RUTTER & ETTING (I don't
know anything about Etting.)
The clipper ships were sexier and seem to have captured
all the attention.
I'd appreciate any suggestions for records, books,
google keywords, and of course, family information is
always welcome!

Someone born in 1820 or so - you're going to be
looking for church records, family bible records, I'd
even look (if possible) for tombstone records.
It was law in the colonial days that all births,
deaths, marriages being recorded in the official
Episcopal parish church. After the Maryland's
constitution was enacted in 1776 the law lost it's
effect - some churches did continue to record vital
stats but it was no longer law. It was 1865 before the
first attempt was made to begin officially recording
births/deaths/marriages in MD but after 1898 before
compilance was really in gear.

Thank you for the info about the Baltimore City Historical Society in
reference to my William John Wilson. I went into google and found an article
about the Society, but it didn't look as if it was established at a precise
location. Do you have an exact address and business hours for the BCHS.
Thank you

I am seeking information on a child born to CLARA GUSBERG in Connecticut
sometime in the few years immediately prior to 1919 when CLARA gave birth to
a son on Sept. 19. His birth certificate says 2nd child of this mother, both
living. Clara married SAMUEL EDWARD COLE in Aug. 17, 1917 in Hartford, CT.
but in 1918 lived at 48 No.Chapel St., in Newark, DE. By the 1920 census
Clara was living with her infant son in Simsbury, CT. with the Psaty family
and apparently separated from Mr. Cole. The CT. Dept. of Vital Records
refuses to provide any info on this half-sibling of mine and all others in
the family who might have been able to are deceased. Clara was born in
Newark, N.J. in 1896 and lived at various times in Delaware and Rhode
Island. If anyone can provide information on this birth please e-mail me
personally. Thank you.

Verna,
Birth records for Baltimore City from 1875 to 1975 are
at the Maryland State Archives in Annapolis. However,
they are no longer doing look-up's and you will either
have to go there in person or have someone do that for
you.
http://www.mdarchives.state.md.us/msa/refserv/html/birthhis.html
Vital records are usually not held at historical
societies or libraries, extracts of those records if
published may be there but not the actual records.
I think finding birth records for that particular time
frame is difficult for everyone. Laws had been passed
but had not yet been compiled with overall and many
churches had by then stopped keeping detailed birth
records. I've found it difficult to find bc's for
folks in that generation.

Dear Listers,
I was reading my list email when I saw the name "Chuck Carter". I
went to school with a Charles "Chuck" Carter at a NY College in the late
'60's. Was wondering if it was the same person. Lost track of him in early
'70's. He was from Ohio or Pa I think.
Have a good weekend everyone.

Verna,
Surely the records are sitting at the Baltimore City Historical Society in
downtown Baltimore! I'd bet they are; but you have to go there in person and
perform lookups. They will help you once there...
Also, there might possibly be a recorded record in one of the many reference
books in the downtown Baltimore City Enoch Pratt Genealogy Room; and I'm
certain the Maryland State level has them up in Annapolis, MD; have you tried
writing to any of these sites at all? I know that the Historical Society is
online and does have pricing and where to write to.. try a search for them at
http://www.google.com/. Seek and thee shall find.

I'm at my wits end trying to find a date of birth for my grandfather William
John Wilson. According to my Aunt's birth certificate from 2/22/1914 he was
age 20 and on my mother's birth certificate on 11/5/1918 he was 23. I assume
he was born, late 1894 or early 1895 in Baltimore City.
He married my grandmother on 2/6/1913 in the 7th Baptist Church on North
Avenue. According to the people in the Church office, no records are
available for that time period. They have no idea what happened to them.
Apparently they married in secret, as they both lied about their ages and my
grandmother gave her middle name as her last on the record of marriage in the
Court House.
I have tried other avenues to no avail. My only option might be a voters
registration. Does anyone know where I might locate a voter record from
maybe from 1915-1917.
Thanks for any suggestions.

I've been out of town for the past week, so I didn't get to send this sooner. On May 6, I just learned that the Baltimore City Historical Society was sponsoring a program at noon the next day (May 7) to visit the Baltimore City Archives. I had never heard of the Baltimore City Historical Society, but decided to check it out, in view of my own and the interest of so many others in the Archives. So I took off from work and went to the Baltimore City Archives on May 7, for what turned out to be a discussion on the status of the Archives and a brief tour. In the next few days, I'll try to send more info on the Baltimore City Archives and its challenges.
The Baltimore City Historical Society appears to be relatively new, is housed at the Maryland Historical Society, and has among its goals the reopening/expansion of places like the Baltimore City Life Museum, the Peale Museum, and the Baltimore City Archives. The President is Judge John Byrnes. I joined the Society for individual dues of $15. You can contact them and request information at:
Baltimore City Historical Society
c/o Maryland Historical Society
201 W. Monument Street
Baltimore, MD 21201
email: bchs(a)mdhs.org
Telephone: 410-685-3750, ext. 379
The Baltimore City Historical Society does not appear, at this time, to be a place or resource for you to do research on ansestors. It hopes to collect/donate books on Baltimore to the MD. Hist. Society. But it is a fledgeling organization and I believe research on Baltimore ancestors should still focus on the Maryland State Archives, Maryland Historical Society, the Pratt Library and other facilities.

The names, order of birth and names of spouses are certain as they are
repeated numerous times in the five administrative accounts for Henry's
estate by his wife Mary and the son Henry. The dates of marriage and
death I have for the most part gotten from Luella Jelly a descendant of
William. William left Maryland in 1817 for Jefferson Co., Ohio where he
died. Luella was fortunate to have a well preserved letter written by
one of William's daughters who had moved to Illinois.
The purchase of the property from Richard Choate's wife in 1814 and the
record of his occupation as innkeeper at his death seem to prove that
Henry was in Maryland in 1814 at which time he was 60 years old. He
was born about 1754, but does not appear in the DAR patriot records.
If anyone has access to militia records or similar sources I would
appreciate hearing from them. However, considering all we know about
him, the absence of any reference before 1814 (except for the 1803
Virginia deed) points to the possibility that he emigrated to Md from
elsewhere. The Tyler Co, Virginia census was destroyed.
I would appreciate any information or suggestions that would help
locate Henry's early history.

Hi:
Does anyone on the list have a resource that might have the marriage of :
Herman BUSCHMANN and Anna Marie KRAMER.
The date I have is 12 April 1868, in Baltimore, MD, but according to the rest
of the records in the family bible, they would have had four children before
they married, and I think that was highly improbable!
Thanks,
Mary Jean
