Membership in the SAR/DAR
by Christopher T. Smithson
Membership in the Sons of the American Revolution is open to any male
who is a descendant and of at least 18 years old of a Revolutionary War
Patriot. The same for DAR, and being of good character.
Service for the Patriot includes Civil Service (Petit Jury, Grand Jury,
Signer of the Oath of Alligance and Freeman) and Military Service (in
any Militia Company in any of the 13 Colonies and the Ohio Territory)
with suitable documentation of the patriots service.
What can not be used as proof of service:
DAR PATRIOT INDEX
DAR Applications prior to abt 1964 depending on documentation used
SAR Applications prior to abt 1964 depending on documentation used
If you had your father, mother, uncle, aunt, cousin or grandparent join
either organazation it depends on the documentation given when they
applied for membership.
If you are joining DAR you cannot source an SAR Application as proof.
But if you are joining SAR you can use a DAR Application if
documentation is suitable.
If you wish to join either organization please let me know. If you live
local in or near Harford County I can put you in contact with the local
chapters of DAR (which there is 2 in Harford County: Gov William Paca
and Harford Town) including the only SAR chapter in Harford County (Col.
Aquila Hall) which I am President and Registrar of.
If you live at a distance I can get you the name of a chapter near your
home and their contact person.
Sincerely,
Christopher T. Smithson, President
