Re: [MDGEN-L] Recuriting Young Blood into Genealogical Research & Membership Into Lineage Societies
by Margaret Isabelle Obert
There are an incredible number of people who are interested in genealogy
right now, particular through the use of the internet. I think it can be a
short step from interest in genealogy to interest in lineage societies.
Many of these societies provide excellent support to patriotic, civic,
veteran, and children's causes, but do not necessarily get the publicity
they need to advertise what they are doing in their communities and continue
to grow.
I think the lineage societies need to step in here, and publicize their
missions, their membership requirements, and who to contact for information.
I know that some of the societies have this information on the internet, but
not everyone uses the internet. The societies could advertise through
genealogical conferences, seminars, or through genealogical society
newsletters. They could hold workshops, explaining their missions and
lineage requirements. If the lineage societies fail to have an active
recruitment effort, some of them are going to fail to exist.
For those interested in lineage societies, there is one thing to keep in
mind: any lineage society is going to require proof of births, marriages,
and deaths, and links from one generation to the next. The one problem with
obtaining genealogical information through the internet is that many people
do not follow through and get the actual documentation required for any
lineage society.
