On page 411 of The Massengills, Massengales and Variants (1472-1931), by Samuel Evans
Massengill, M.D. there is reproduced a letter from my grand-aunt Mrs. Sidney J. Jones, who
wrote: "Mary Massengale, born June 27, 1798, married William Murray Christian of
Goochland County, VA. Mary Massengale's mother was Tabitha Cobb. Tabitha Cobb had one
sister, Patience, who married William Baker and moved to Louisiana."
Presuming that Mrs. Jones was correct, that could be the Patience Baker you refer to. I
have never been able to clearly trace which Cobb family that Tabitha and Patience came
from. However, Tabitha's daughter, Mary Massengale, removed to Bayou Sara in West
Feliciana Parish and William Murray Christian was quite active in the land records in St.
Francisville and the parish right across the Mississippi from there. Their daughter,
Tabitha Ann Christian, married a Mr. Loy, with whom she had a child. However, Mary
(Massengale) Christian, Mr. Loy, and the baby all died (I believe of disease) circa
1839-1845 in Bayou Sara, so Tabitha Ann Christian removed back to Alabama where she
married my gg-grandfather, Joseph Elias Law in 1845.
There has been a great debate over the past century as to exactly who were the parents of
Tabitha and Patience Cobb. Your writing seems to make a case that Arthur Cobb would have
been the parent of Tabitha and Patience as that would offer a good explanation as to why
Mary (Massengale) Christian and Patience (Cobb) Baker would have both removed to West
Feliciana Parish from as far away as Alabama. It would also perhaps solidify the link
between Patience (Cobb) Baker and her sister with the family of Arthur Cobb who was so
active in West Feliciana Parish records.
