The description of John Turnbull's marriages is somewhat misleading. He married
Catharine Rucker in 1784 in Mobile, and she was named as his wife in his will written in
1798. He died in September 1798 or 1799; Catharine lived on until 1832. In his will he
named three illegitimate children, George, William and Sylvia. For more information on his
estate, go to: http://ftp.rootsweb.com/pub/usgenweb/la/e-batonrouge/history/turnjoyc.txt
Information is also available on John Turnbull and his family at
Sarah Brashears, who m. George Turnbull, was apparently the daughter of Turner Brashear,
an early Indian trader in the old Natchez District. Abut 1803 he opened Brashear's
Stand on the Natchez Trace, near Jackson. He seems to have been married to two Choctaw
wives, and there is some disagreement about their names. I am currently researching the
Brashears and would welcome additional information on that family.
