Laswell joined Co. C, 1st Regt. Inf., Calif. Vols. during the Civil War, and he used the alias of Martin Turpin/Terpen at this time. After discharge he went to Colorado where he served with the 1st Colorado Cavalry and 1st Colorado Inf., but used his real name of Martin Laswell. Next firm info has him in California, filing for a pension in 1904, His widow, Emma A. (or C) filed for widow benefits from California in 1919. I have a possible link here. In the 1880 census it shows a Martin Laswell, 44, born in MS (both his parents born in KY), wife E. C. (or A) Lasswell, 38, born Ohio (both er parents born in VA) and a daughter Ora, 4, born in Texas.
