I saw these wills in Madison county, NY records (on film) while tracking down
another surname. Perhaps someone else needs this information. These 2 men
appeared in my notes from census records but I haven't seen other data on
>From LDS film # 408506; Wills of Madison county NY for the years 1831-1850:
pp 412-413 --Ethan/Ethen Lamphar/Lamphiar and wife, Esther, (who may have
been referred to also as Etta) The writing in the will record is atrocious!
residence: Brookfield, Madison county, NY; Ethan deceased June 07, 1838
(the will says it is the last will and testatment of Ethan Lamphar and wife,
1/2 of estate to Hamilton Baptist Theological Seminary; 1/2 estate to another
Baptist school I could not read. Wife to have her needs taken care of in her
lifetime. No children mentioned. Children of Ethan's siblings who wish to
attend either of the schools should have their tuition paid for out of his
Executors: Butler Brown; Ethan Stillman; Signed 19 Mar 1838 There are at
least 2 affidavits/proofs connected to the will.
Esther Lamphier (exact spelling on her will) on the same film but in a
later vol.; pp. 145/146 (each book is indexed); 8 Feb 1841 recorded.
She was also living in Brookfield at her death. Wearing apparel to sisters,
Sarah, Desire and a 3rd sister I can't read. Another heir is a Mr. Brewster.
The remainder of the estate to Baptist Theological Seminary. signed 3
September 1840. One of the proofs given has a long list of names from
various counties in NY; mostly women listed as wife of someone. Those I can
read: Anne/Anna Marsh; Marilla, wife of Lewis Lathrop; Lois, wife of William
Newton; Leithrop(sp) of Allegheny county; Andrew Gilbert of Allegheny
county; Leman(sp) or Simeon Marsh of Pittsford, Monroe county...and about
6or 7 more. I can't read it well enough to know why this list is there or how
they relate. (maybe the nieces and nephews?)
LDS film # 408506; last Will and Testament of Aaron Landphair, late of
Brookfield, deceased, and proof recorded 01 August 1839 (p. 40)
wife, Lydia; son-in-law, Isaasc Chasbrough or Cheesbrough to be granted
real estate in Madison county, NY; sons: Harlow, Alfred, and A__?__ (looks
like Abrat, to me; maybe Abram? or something with Al and a vowel with a t)
all of Rockford, Cuyahoga Co., OH; daughter, Waity Cheesbrough. signed 10
Feb. 1839. Executor, Wait Clark.
(my map of OH has Rockford across the state from Cuyhoga county)
I have Harlow Lamphear in my notes based on History of JoDaviess County, IL.
This Harlow was b. 1820, NY; m. Jane A. Gates, 1862 in Greene county, WI; d.
1913. Had at least 2 daughters: Fannie B. (1867-1887) and Martha B.
(1863-1864) both girls buried with Harlow in Townsend Cemetery, Rush Twp,
JoDaviess county, IL. The bio says there were brothers of Harlow: Hiram &
Hoxie Landphair. Also, Harlow had traveled from Madison county, NY to Ohio
to WI to IL.
I have a Harlow Landphair in a list of Madison county, NY land grantees.
(LDS film # 415230)
Theres is an Aaron Lamphere that appears in 1810 Federal Census for
Brrokfield, Madison county, NY with 3 males under 16 and 1 female under 10
and other female.
I think there are 2 different Harlows probably related but I don't know how.
