I don't want to beat the subject todeath but wanted to mention a few good
sources for more info for those who are near good libraries. Having done this
for so long and belonging to Magna Charta Dames thru this line, I have these
lines way back. I found charts in several places-way back in the dim dark
past there was an article in LIFE magazine with a chart of Queen Elizabeth's
heritage which tied in with ours. I saved it as it was in color and also had
the coats of arms of the Barons. Over the years several different groups have
put out very large charts as well.
But the books I think are quite good on the subject are:
My Southern Families by Hiram Kennedy Douglas which I am sure has been out of
print for years. I found it at the DAR Library in Washington but Clayton in
Houston also has it as well as in Birmingham public library. The Washington
family is one of many he wrote about but his work is quite good
Another is Old Virginia and Her Neighbors and I didn't copy the author as
only copied the chart which is same as these others.
Joanne Sanders wrote quite a few books-rather she went to Barbados and copied
all their birth, marriage and death records from the beginning till about the
Revolution and published them. they are quite good as far as proof for some of
the records of the Washingtons and Laniers who went there before coming to VA.
I know her books are in the National Genealogical Society Library as well as
Then another book I found and Xeroxed lots of pages to compare with what else
I have and didn't photocopy the frontispiece, but it had quite a large section
and PART Three was called Maternal Lines and Allied Families and had a
longchapter of Wshington Ancestry of Elizabeth (Washington)Lanier-which is my
line. It is a typed book and the editor really documented what he had. I do
know it was put out after 1970 and it has lots of maps of locations of the
Washington family homes in England. The last time I was over there I took the
maps and went to each of the locations.
If I can find name of book and author I willnotify the list.
