Thanks to Gloria West for the Washington family information. I think at
the time that was first published they did think John Washington who
married Mary Flood in Surry County, VA, was a son of Sir John Washington
of England. As someone pointed out on the list the other day, though,
subsequent research has pretty well established that John Washington of
Surry was a son of Sir John's brother, Richard.
Regarding Richard Washington, son of John and Mary Flood Washington, it's
always fascinated me that he and his wife, Elizabeth Jordan, had 12
children who all apparently survived to adulthood. From these 12
children, came the two, Elizabeth and Priscilla, who married Laniers and
were responsible for many, many of us Lanier descendants all over the
world. It gets me going on one of those "what-ifs?" lines--what if John
Washington hadn't come to Surry County? He only lived a few more years
and fathered only one child, Richard. What if Richard hadn't survived?
I know, I know, this can go on forever, but it's interesting to think
