Subject: [LANIER-L] Re: Thomas Butler Lanier
Does anyone have the children of Thomas Butler Lanier? I'm trying to
determine if Presley Lanier, 1860 DeKalb Co., GA census, is a brother of
Lewis Rowland Lanier.
I have a photograph of the grave of Presley's wife Nancy (Osborn?) at Stone
Mountain, GA. My mother had written on the back of the photo, " Nancy Lanier,
mother of lulu Osborne and Lizzie Mullenix, grandmother of Livvie Edwards
Osborne Hopkins and Lizzie B. Osborne Moore." This seems to be in conflict
with what my grandmother, Livvie Hopkins told me many years ago that she had
an uncle that was killed in the Civil War at Spottsylvania, and a cousin that
was wounded and later died in the hospital of the measles. This was the fate
of Presley and his oldest son William.
Neither the 1860 or 1870 DeKalb, GA census show Lulu Lanier, b. 1860, in the
family. My thought is that Presley's wife Nancy may have taken Lulu in after
Lewis Rowland Lanier died. Lulu married William Richard Osborne in 1881 in

According to the book LANIER by Ingersoll, Lewis Rowland Lanier is the son of Thomas
Butler Lanier and Nancy (Rowland) Sadler. There are two Pressley listed. I am assuming the
one that you are interseted is Pressley Lanier b 1825 SC who married Nancy L. Austin, and
their oldest son is William L. Lanier b 1846 Stone Mountain, GA. Have no death dates for
Pressley or William. This Pressley is s/o of Bird Lanier and Unknown.
another Pressley Lanier b 1842 SC d Apr 25, 1862 a POW in IL.
Hope this helps.
