I think these are the two major problems for people hunting for
1) When the index was made it was from the original Census sheets made
up by the census taker whose writing was often terrible and/or the
writing was smudged as they wrote in pencil most of the time I believe.
Also the resident might not quite know how to spell there own name and
just say it and the census taker had to write it down as near as it
2) You need to know the place of birth of your rellie - this doesn't
mean the place where birth registered but place of birth itself. Also
you need the approx age by 1901.
Remember that no info on a census is gospel truth - you can tell the
census taker anything you want. I took up our census a few years ago
and you wouldn't believe how inventive some people could be. I noticed
(I kneww many of the homeowners) that they gave the first name the
occupant went by not necessarily the one given at birth etc.
