Hello to everyone on the Lancashire list. I am hoping somebody out there will be able to
help me with my ongoing search.
I am having a great deal of trouble locating the whereabouts of my Joseph
I am desperately trying to search for information on Joseph's father. Joseph married
in 1888 in St Thomas Church in Ardwick.
The marriage certificate I have is not a true copy apparently as it is transcribed (with
thanks to my contact Lee in Oz for his help on this) so I would like to know if someone
could look at the parish records for me for the marriage which took place on the 17th
December 1888 between "Joseph Froggett" aged 30 Batchelor, Police Officer living
at 171 Tipping Street to "Mary Hannah Gilpin" aged 19 Spinster, living at Apsley
Grove. The marriage certificate says that Joseph's father was a "John Froggett
and his occupation is listed as General Labourer. This is what I am querying as Lee says
I should check this out as it may be wrong as I can find no record of any birth for Joseph
Froggett and I have wasted a lot of money on birth certificates that do not match up.
Now, I am presuming that Joseph's age has been written down incorrectly on the
marriage certificate as it says he is 30 in 1888 and going by the censuses he appears on
for 1891 (aged 29) and 1901 (38). Joseph joined the Police Force (which is now known as
Greater Manchester Police) on 4 May 1887 (aged 26) but prior to joining the Police was in
the 2nd Leicester Regiment for 12 years .
I have tried searching the IGI, the 1881 census and have checked all birth entries at the
Family Record Centre in London for the years 1852 to 1874. The only information I have
at the moment is the following from 1891 and 1901 censuses.
1891 census at this address:-
21 Nelson Street, Ardwick, Manchester
Joseph Froggatt aged 29, Head, Married, Police Constable b. Manchester
Mary H Froggatt aged 21, Wife b. Manchester
William Froggatt aged 1, b. Manchester
1901 census at this address:-
60 Prince Street, South Manchester, Ardwick St. Silas
Joseph Froggitt aged 38, Head, Married, Police Constable b. Lancs, Manchester
Mary Froggitt aged 31, Wife, Married, b. Lancs, Manchester
William Froggitt aged 11, Son, b. Lancs, Manchester
Joseph Froggitt aged 6, Son, b. Lancs, Manchester
I have Joseph Froggett's death certificate for 6 June 1905 and he was still living at
60 Prince Street as a Policeman and he died aged 43. I have been in contact with
Manchester Archives to ascertain where he would have been buried (thinking along the lines
of Ardwick Cemetery which is the nearest one to Prince Street which unfortunately, is now
a school playing field so no gravestones exist anymore.
Could someone please offer me any further advice or assistance as I do not know where to
go from here.
Thank you to all that may be able to help.
Kylie Barnes (nee Froggett)
