Maybe of interest to some:
I recently tried FMP's newspaper collection for the first time and was
surprised to find that although you can zoom in nicely in the screen viewer
- to see even small print - if you download the image, the quality is MUCH
less - with small print not really legible.
I sent the following query to FMP:
I've used FMP quite a bit and am familiar with downloading images
military records, royal records) which always gives me a good high resolution
I've just tried your newspaper archive for the first time and ran into this
When I first get the image up in your on page viewer, I can zoom right in and
read everything perfectly - so the page has obviously been scanned at a good
resolution. However, if I click the "download image" button, instead of
downloading the high res image it opens another window (which seems to be
called 'A4') which is a different image viewer containing a much lower
resolution image - the maximum zoom of 400% shows a blurry image at much less
resolution than I could view on the original page. The download button on this
viewer does work - but the image resolution is too low to clearly read the
So my problem is: I can view a high resolution image OK but only download a
lower resolution image which is not clearly legible.
And received the following reply:
Thank you for your email.
The newspaper images provided on the site are provided in collaboration with
the British Library.
The images when downloaded will be of draft quality only.
Which I thought was a bit off - they make no mention of this fact when
publicising this resource ;o)
I mention this for interest - we often download images for later perusal and
could miss this until we get a nasty surprise later.
There are, of course, work-arounds - such as zooming to a good legible size
and taking a series of screen shots as you scroll (and/or pan) through the
article - but they are a lot less convenient than just downloading the image
- as works well with most other resources.
I just hope this is not the start of a trend of making records viewable only
on screen with only draft quality downloadable.
