I always ask for the 'crap' machine in the corner - it's got the best lens
by miles. At least you didn't get the one that sounds like an aircraft
taking off! Guaranteed to give you a headache.
Also a good idea not to visit Wigan when Latics are playing at home.
Maybe you should e-mail them and get them to check it for you - if you
explain your predicament they may oblige.
The alternative is the main archives in Leigh - they may have a copy as
well. My catalogue suggests they don't - but it is an old copy and not up to
Also, there isn't much point writing to the church - a) they don't have the
registers and b) the last I heard they had an interregnum. The person who
was deputising was the Rector of Wigan - and if you contact him, he'll
probably pass you on to me.
I don't think the local family history society has anything on St Michael's
According to my holdings list for LRO, they don't have a copy, but again,
it's an old list.
Neither is there a copy listed in the Pink Book for Manchester Central
It is on my To Do List for the OPC site but I'm really bogged down with All
Saints burials at the minute.
I'm sorry you had such a bad experience but believe me - family history is
fairly low on the Council's list of priorities. As is parking. And, to judge
by the street lamp opposite my house, so is streetlighting.
And if there are any Wigan councillors on the list, you don't get my vote
until I get my mini-roundabout that I was promised three years ago. I did
not ask for a bus lane that no-one uses, nor a bus lane that goes nowhere -
both of which cause monstrous traffic jams.
Ok, rant over.
Maybe the Register Office can help you?
