I can add to that. As I've mentioned many times on this and the Liverpool
List, my great-grandfather was born in Liverpool in 1859. After the
deaths of his parents in ~1870, he was sent to live with an uncle. When
the "Liverpool Sheltering Homes" opened in 1873, he was sent to live there.
John "Stanley" LEWIS was 14, and he might have made his own decision to - go
to Canada, and he left in 1874. He went to a family in Nova Scotia and
became a printer's apprentice.
